Looking back on 2024 through the seasons:
(video here: https://youtu.be/3wjBBE6flqU?si=tQaB7... )
The flowers I got for my birthday in spring. A cake I made with the first raspberries from our garden. With the beginning of September, we need to heat again which also means cozy afternoon hours by the fireside. A misty October morning, and finally, trees before the winter sky. Whatever is past, both joy and pain, may God take it back into his hands; and may he guide us in our new year and give us all a blessed new beginning.

I am currently sick - like most people (at least that's my impression). So I will not be posting anything for a few days. On the picture you can see what Christmastime looks like one of the German North Sea islands. German Christmas markets attract tourists from all over the world - if you are considering visiting Germany for this reason, I strongly recommend staying away from the large and touristy ones. They are all the same and nearly everything you can buy comes from Chinese factories. If you want handmade or regionally produced items, locally made waffles and cakes, sausages from a local butcher - go to the tiny Christmas markets in small towns and even villages. They will last only a weekend or so, but you can go to visit several of them and have a beautiful trip visiting so many medieval towns, castles, churches, and get to know the real Germany that lives in those quaint, unimportant places as well as remarkable historical sites scattered all over the country.

Happy Saint Nicholas‘ Day!
All over Germany, children polished their boots and put them outside last night, to find them filled with sweets, fruit and little presents in the morning. In many preschools and primary schools, Nicholas visited them in person today.
Very many German children sang this song for him:https://youtu.be/qws_Qi3SVVw?si=mmgJD...
Here's a little Nicholas quiz for you: What does the ship (picture 3) have to do with it?

Christmas time is here at last! https://youtu.be/tpZfDnUBIow?si=7eVML...
Time for Adventskaffee: "Coffee and cake" with gingerbread, cookies and Stollen, and with the Advent wreath on the table. Winters are dark, windy and wet in Germany but I don't mind that at all as long as the Christmas lights are up and I can go home to sit by the fire and sing a song or two. The song in my latest video is the one that used to kick off Christmas time in Germany for centuries before it got replaced more recently. It is over 1600 years old.

Winter is coming to the Solling mountains. The last flowers are now gone, and it's beginning to feel like Advent time. Tomorrow will be St. Martin's Day, so we will be attending the lantern festival. For me, that is the beginning of Advent - it used to be six weeks before it was reduced to four. Those four weeks are, by most people, felt to be pre-christmas time, so I appreciate the very first two weeks as a quiet time of reflection. The air smells frosty, the mountains are hiding in mist, and when the children have gone to bed, I like to sit and sing some old folk songs to myself. youtube.com/shorts/Oizvb3d1df...

Most apples have been harvested by now, but I found an abandoned apple tree on the hillside. So I will be canning apple sauce after all - our own two apple trees are tiny and do not bear fruit yet. I also found lots of blackthorn fruit and took some home to make jam. Something must have gone wrong, though - what I received was syrup. Perfect for (alcohol free) blackthorn punch, which is a traditional home remedy against a sore throat and therefore the perfect drink on a cold autumn evening!
Recipe: Fill your cup to about 2cm with blackthorn syrup, add a teaspoon of honey, some cinnamon, cardamom and cloves, then add warm water (not too hot because of the honey) until the cup is full.

Join me in my village home while I prepare for a cozy fall afternoon. I am baking a simple, old-fashioned apple pie. Honey, cinnamon and cloves fill our country kitchen with that amazing scent of fall.
October changes the face of autumn from mellow fruitfulness to misty gray tranquility, while days get shorter and winter will soon knock at our door. But the very last flowers are still blooming in our countryside garden - I can see them from the kitchen window.

Welcome to some simple song singing - both at home and outdoors. I am not a singer - just a person who sings. Folk songs are a vital part of our history and heritage. There are several channels that promote untypical German folk music that was more imposed on people than actually flowing from their hearts. I try to balance that a bit with what I sing here. Like many other cultures, the cultures (yes, plural) of Germany are very much endangered. Not from outside, but from generations that no longer valued them and did not pass them on, beginning with the industrialisation. So younger people don´t even know any authentic German folk songs or other parts of traditional culture. But folk songs speak of the everyday experiences of regular people like you and me. They tell the history of the real people. We matter. Please know that I value all cultures equally.
