Have you ever seen dolls with no eyes? This is a very interesting tradition in Japan, as they are iconic symbols of perseverance, good luck, and goal-setting.

The Daruma doll's design symbolizes resilience and determination, with its weighted base allowing it to return to an upright position when knocked over, representing the ability to overcome obstacles and setbacks. Daruma dolls are closely associated with New Year's celebrations and are often purchased at the beginning of the year as talismans of good luck and prosperity.

It is customary to paint his left eye while making wishes for the year ahead. Hopefully the wishes will come true along the year, and then you paint the right eye. The full circle of gratitude is completed when you return the Daruma doll to Shorinzan Darumaji temple in the city of Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture. It's about 50 min via Shinkansen from Tokyo Station.
