I've yet to try MuvLuv Altenative and SteinGates since my go to VN is usually serious romance story. White Album 2 is still my #1 so far.

I just finished alternative. I played through steins;gate a few years back, and I think both are phenomenal! I love a story with likable, relatable characters. Both have interesting stories as well.

Honestly, i think its so far from deserving the top spot. To me everything up to the twizzlers "twist was great, but i dont understand how people who think its perfect think a badly disguised fetish scene meant to be sexualizing and a horridly rushed ending that rendered the entireity of unlimited (the best stuff) and alternative almost totally pointless. Steins gate is so much more consistently written and honestly deserves the top spot especially being one of the only vns to ever get a great anime. Trust me. the civil war and geopolitics and characters were great, but id love to hear someone defend those 2 terribly done scenes to me lol

No no, the drop is deserved.
Frankly, I'm surprised it's not lower.
Anyone not knowing of muv luv will likely come across it as the anime. The anime is presented as a military vs alien epic with its first episode even titled "The State of the World," implying it laying the ground work of the story to come.
Then episode 2 throws a middle finger to this as the story becomes a high school rom-com at a UN building, of which the main character gains access based on a feeling of the professor/researcher.
I gave it to episode 5 before looking into what went wrong to find out it's an Inter-dimensional story on the 3rd loop of a spin off to a dating sim.
The closest thing to a prequel of important characters being "KimiNozo" or "Rumbling Hearts."
... I didn't expect the "cute girls die until you get to the only real one, isn't that jarring?" type story.
tldr: sells itself to modern audiences as mech/military fight for survival, only to find out it's Doki Doki Literature Club with robots and a twist of choosing the right girl resulting in humanity getting 30 years to prepare for an alien invasion.
