Thank goodness there's someone else who agrees.
I swear, since the Mimic's introduction, it's felt like everyone assumed it was supposed to be the explanation for Burntrap and nobody thought to question that idea all the way through RUIN. However, though I haven't read B-7 2 yet, I have heard that the final epilogue ends with the Mimic nowhere near the situation Burntrap starts in, and of course there are the points you brought up. Really hoping more people see this.
(It kind of reminds me of what happened with Cassidy, but that's a theory for another day.)

One of more interesting details in RUIN to me is how Gregory says "That thing in the sinkhole tricked you, I really don't know what it is, but it's been trapped down here for a really long time."
Not only does he seem to know a heck of a lot about Blob and seemingly his master in GGY, but also… down here? Trapped? I already feel like counting the Burntrap area as "down here" in relation to The Mimic's is one heck of a streach, but even ignoring that, how exactly would he be "trapped" if he was able to come down all these flights of stairs? Security Breach couldn't have been that long ago if Cassie, roughly the same age, was to an open Pizzaplex, so for Mimic to be Burntrap, it kind of requires Greg be talking about both the SB timeframe and the right now. But those just don't match up I think.

William is to FNAF, what Dr. Wily is to Megaman. It doesn't feel right without him. I do like the idea of both the Mimic and Afton running around as seperate characters though. It adds a new element while keeping the supernatural aspect. With the "Burntrap is Mimic" thing, you loose that Supernatural aspect and I think Fnaf as a story overall suffers from that. There are plenty of "Evil AI/Robot" stories out there. The ghost and possession thing helps add a new twist to that.

It is fascinating how many people immediately went to "mimic = Burntrap"
It's essentially disproved off of the design alone. You said it perfectly.
The leaps in logic are comical even for FNaF. The mimic would've had to crawl out of Burntrap, get an entirely new body, somehow get trapped behind a wall that had a security system set up for the mimic specifically, and wait until the pizzaplex collapsed to lure in Cassie, then get trapped down there again or die moments after being freed.
I'd rather take William being back again than that.

So, in typical fnaf fashion. We have no idea whether burntrap is retconned or he's out there somewhere. Welp, guess we gotta wait for another lore reveal from the books lol
