Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) In Children – What Parents Need To Know!
GBS is a rare but serious condition where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, paralysis, and breathing problems. Warning Signs:
✅ Sudden weakness in legs or arms
✅ Difficulty walking or standing
✅ Tingling or numbness
✅ Trouble breathing or swallowing
✅ Unsteady movements or loss of reflexes
What You Should Do:
1. Prevent Infections (A Common Trigger)
Good Hygiene:
✅ Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
✅ Use hand sanitizers when soap isn’t available.
Food Safety:
✅ Avoid undercooked poultry (linked to Campylobacter infection, a major GBS trigger).
✅ Drink clean, safe water.
✅ Avoid partially cooked meat or paneer.
✅ Should cook the food above 170F to kill the causative organism.
2. Strengthen Immunity by providing
✅ A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
✅ Adequate sleep to support immune function.
✅ Physically active to maintain overall health.
3. Seek Early Treatment for Illnesses
If your child has a viral or bacterial infection, treat it early to prevent complications.
Watch for symptoms like:
✅ Persistent diarrhea (could be Campylobacter infection).
✅ Flu-like illness or fever.
✅ Recent respiratory/GI infections.
If your child develops weakness after an infection, seek medical help immediately!
4. Avoid Unnecessary Immune System Stimulation
✅Avoid self-medication with strong immune-modulating drugs unless prescribed.
✅ Be cautious with unproven immune-boosting supplements.
✅ Most children recover fully with proper care and physiotherapy.
What NOT to Do:
❌ Don’t wait! GBS can get worse quickly. Early treatment is key.
❌Don’t panic—with medical care, most kids improve significantly.
❌Don’t ignore breathing issues—if your child has trouble breathing, go to the hospital ASAP.
Stay informed. Early action can save lives!

The legacy of Lotus Hospitals is that of Dr. V.S.V. Prasad and one that precedes Lotus Hospitals itself. Having studied medicine and completed his residency in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (A.I.I.M.S) in 1991, Dr. Prasad further specialised in the US and UK to acquire his Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care & Neonatology. After 7 years of training, he then returned to India to set up a pediatric care hospital of global standards. He helped set up and founded a few children’s hospitals in Hyderabad before setting up Lotus Hospitals in 2006 with the mission to provide quality healthcare that was accessible to all.
