Hi everyone! It has been a hot minute since I have posted a new video. I have been super busy with work since I started a new job in January. I finally published a video today that has been some time in the making.

Back when I planned my first thru hike on the Appalachian Trail, I had no idea how much to budget for it. Since then and having hiked multiple long trails, I have learned a lot about financial planning for a thru hike and how much a thru hike costs. On my 2022 CDT thru hike, I kept a log of all of my expenses, then broke them into 11 categories and set about putting some data together, as well as a key metric that would be useful for budgeting for a thru hike. It took me a while to finish, but today I published a fairly comprehensive video on how much a thru hike costs and how to budget and financially plan for a thru hike. If you've ever wondered how much thru-hiking costs and how much and where the money gets spent, this is the video for you!

In this video I also talk about the new, no contract, cheap cell phone plan I am using day to day and while hiking. It's awesome! I also talk about high-interest savings accounts and give a link to one that I have been using for a while to help compound my savings for trips and other things.

My hope is this will serve as a reference point or useful tool for those planning a future thru hike. This video is DEFINITELY more detailed and longer than my normal videos, but I wanted to offer up what information I could to make it helpful for its intended target audience. Whether the video is for you or not, I do hope this finds you healthy and well as we start to head into the holiday season. It has been a busy year "hiking" on some new metaphorical work trails for me in 2023 :-). But, I have still been getting outdoors here on the coast in Wilmington, NC, taking runs along the beach and walking around the marshes. There are so many cool birds here! I also made it to Linville Gorge in western North Carolina to see the fall foliage.

Thanks for checking out the video!

Be well,
--Hungry Cat

Since I finished my CDT thru hike, I started a new job and have been quite busy. That said, my wife and I just got back from a 9-day trip to Panama that we planned a while back. It was a blast and quite the adventure. I didn’t do any filming on this one, but I’ll leave a few pictures here.

Wow! This channel has now grown to over 1K subscribers - so cool! I’m so happy that you all are enjoying the content I create. Though work is busy, I hope to produce some more content not too long after the CDT series finishes up. Thank you all for your continued support - for watching, sharing, and liking the videos. It really helps me to share with more people by making YouTube more likely to recommend the videos to others with similar interests. It’s possible that in 6 months to a year I might even start generating some income, which would be amazing. But regardless, I plan to keep capturing memories and using YouTube as a creative outlet and, hopefully, continue to deliver valued content your way. Thanks! -Hungry Cat

Hi everyone!

It’s been a minute…. I just wanted to wish you all a happy holiday season, and all the best for the rest of 2022 and into 2023! I hope you are able to have some adventures in the new year.

Since returning from the CDT I have been working hard to put together a documentary series about the trip. I am just about finished! The series is 13 episodes between 5 and 6 minutes in length each, so it is very digestible. The first episode will air on Thursday, December 29, and a new episode will be released each subsequent Thursday thereafter until they are all done.

If you haven’t already, please do subscribe and hit the notification bell if you want to be notified when those (and other) videos are released.

I’m really pleased with the end product and super excited to share my CDT thru-hike experience with you all! The videos are full of spectacular scenery, interesting moments, and wildlife galore. Having that 200mm zoom on my camera really helped me to get some nice wildlife close ups - elk, deer, bear, pronghorn, mountain goats, marmot, and more!

Enjoy the holidays and look for episode 1 on the 29th!

All the best,
Hungry Cat

Wanted to share a few photos from Montana. The CDT through Montana has been gorgeous. Lots of ridge walking up on the divide. I’m pretty tired, but the hike has been and continues to be amazing. Glacier National Park and the Canadian border finish line are right around the corner!

The CDT passes through Yellowstone National Park, and conveniently right beside Old Faithful geyser. The first picture is of Old Faithful. The others are from thermal areas in the backcountry right off the CDT. While Old Faithful is impressive, the backcountry geysers were amazing because I was the only one there! I’m currently charging my phone and drying out my tent and sleeping bag in front of the visitor center. I think I’m confusing some of the tourists :-)
