Invigorating pibroch, triplepipes, and doublepipes through singing, sleuthwork, and intercultural collaboration
I began producing videos in 2009, originally to demonstrate triplepipes before shipping them to customers. In these I offer tips and tricks, giving a taste what the instruments are capable of. Some videos are of public performances (such as my collaborations with Indian musicians). Others present research in which video is more effective supporting arguments, changing what we believe, than writing. Converting insights that are fundamentally sonic or muscular into graphic form can be ludicrously inefficient, wasting resources and perpetuating the misunderstanding and bad othering between silos that is sadly all too common. The aulos videos are impacting how we understand Ancient Greek music (e.g. youtu.be/MiH1FxR3Lb0): an ongoing journey into the dark, expanding the perimeter of the unknown.
