In early 2003 I was living in northern New Hampshire, where fun was defined as snowmobiling, hunting, or going up to "the camp," none of which I like to do. I saw a news story about a freeway closure somewhere in Texas near a military base. It was newsworthy because the 9/11 attacks had happened so recently and everyone was living in fear of when the next attack would hit. Seems the freeway was closed because someone saw a man pull over to the side of the road and go under a bridge and come back out and drive off. All the alarms went off. Turns out he was geocaching. I went to geocaching.com to find out what it was all about and was immediately hooked. I bought an early Garmin 12 channel GPS and was off and running - into the woods looking for Tupperware or an ammo can.
