Have you even wondered which corporations are the most and least trusted in Canada? Well this report from the University of Victoria Gustavson School of Business can help paint a picture.(1)
Every year the Gustavson School of Business conducts a survey asking Canadian customers to rank their trust levels with hundreds of brands. This year they asked 9189 Canadians to rank 402 national brands as trusted or not. The report provides the current rankings at the industry level, which reveals an interesting story for the growing distrust with Big Tech companies. The report has little details on each individual brand, but luckily they provide their data history tables in a separate document so I can do the analysis on my own.(2)
This year's report mainly focuses on the brands and sectors at the top and bottom of the trust rankings. Gustavson lists the top 10 and worst 10 corporations in terms of trust rankings with respect to treatment of customer data and employees. The top businesses for trust with data are mostly Big Banks, Finance, and Insurance companies. Those that rank at the bottom are mainly Big Tech companies such as Google, YouTube, and Facebook. The trust rankings for employee treatment lists different types of businesses over the data trust rankings: Costco ranks #1, RBC is the only Big Bank in the list, and CAA sneaks into 10th place. This may be a surprise with how CAA left their employees in the Tricity Area out in the cold all winter long on strike. The worst brands for employee treatment are mainly Food Service/Delivery and Big Tech companies.
For the analysis at the individual brand level, I took a subset of data from Gustavson's huge data set to see which specific businesses dropped in the trust rankings. I focused on the Big Tech sector brands for the data distrust result, and then also picked some well known Canadian businesses. The interesting trends that pop out in the Big Tech sector graph is the growth of distrust with Google and Amazon as they join the other Big Tech distrustful giants. Google starts losing trust in 2019, whereas Amazon follows suit in 2020. The Canadian brands depict a similar story for Tim Horton's compared to the other low ranking distrustful companies, as the graph shows that customers are losing trust with Tim Horton's since 2018. Horton's decline puts it into the middle rankings, but it doesn't compare yet to Air Canada, Bell, or Rogers. It appears that Canadians are losing faith with Horton's, but would still rather get a coffee from them over flying with Air Canada.
What do you think? Do you trust any of these corporations with your data? Do you no longer trust Amazon, Google, or Tim Horton's? Does CAA really care about their employees?

Have you ever wondered how the Covid lock-downs impacted the job market in the Guelph area? How does it compare to the previous decade? Well these graphs can help paint a picture.
Here's an update from The City of Guelph on the Labour Force Survey up to the end of 2021(1). The report contains the past 12 years of data on Guelph's Labour Force size, Employment numbers, and the Unemployment rate. They also include the Participation and Employment rates, which help reveal the true time trends in Guelph's job market.
The City of Guelph mainly focuses on the past 2 years, where the first two graphs show the post Covid recovery. They highlight December's low unemployment rate of 3.9% as a positive indicator, as it is the lowest unemployment rate in the Guelph area since Covid began. Two weeks to flatten the curve, two years to return to previous trends. It's a good story to tell based on the medium-run recovery.
What I find more interesting is the long-run trends pictured in the last two graphs. On the aggregate, we can see over the past decade that Guelph's Labour Force and Employment numbers have steadily increased, whereas the Unemployment rate remains steady. A larger pool of workers and more people working is a good thing, but the ratios tell a different story. Even with a decade of Labour Force growth, the Participation and Employment ratios have negative trends over this time frame.
Well how is it possible that the ratios are falling while the aggregates are rising? This must be coming from a difference in the relative size of the aggregate growth rates influencing the ratios. The decreasing ratios with growing aggregates imply that both the percentage growth rate in Guelph's Labour Force and Employment numbers must be LESS than the percentage growth rate in the overall population. Our population is growing, but the percentage of them participating and working in the labour force is falling over the past decade in Guelph. Is that a problem? Well declining participation and employment rates are known problems in other countries, such as with Japan's Aging Population Issue's(2) and the looming threat of automation. Will this become a long-run problem in Guelph? Who knows, but Guelph's numbers are pointing that way...
What do you think? Has Guelph's job market actually recovered to previous trends? Do these long-run trends worry you? Will Guelph become the next Japan? Is Guelph's City Council playing a losing game of SimCity? Will James Gordon's next song be about these Career Crybabies?
