On this youtube channel, I post video's on my research on traditional rice cultivation by Maroons in French Guiana and Suriname.
Rice is an important staple food for Maroons, descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped from plantations in the 17th and 18th century and established free communities in the dense Amazonian forest.
I am an ethnobotanist, working for Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden and Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
My project on Maroons rice was financed by the National Geographic Society, grant nr. GEFNE 184-16.
All videos on rice are filmed by Alice Bertin in July 2017. The languages spoken in the videos are Sranantongo (Dutch Creole, the lingua franca of Suriname), Aucan (language of Aucan or Ndyuka Maroons), Saramaccan (language of Saramaccan Maroons), Dutch and French. Sometimes they are all spoken in one video, that's why I added English subtitles.
