The 40 days of Lent echo the 40 years in the Wilderness, where Israel had to learn to trust in God. God gives us all wilderness experiences that likewise are opportunities to grow in faith. Read the rest of the story: www.fatherdave.org/blog/god-helps-those-who-help-tā€¦

The past contains many stories. One of them is the story of what God has been doing with humanity, and thatā€™s the story we need to adopt as our own, for our story defines our identity, and our identity will determine our destiny. Read more on www.fatherdave.org/blog/choose-your-life-story-carā€¦

The idea of the 'Horns of Moses' goes back to an ambiguity in the Hebrew wording of Exodus 34:29. It literally reads, ā€œMoses did not know that the skin of his face was qāran-edā€, where the Hebrew word, ā€˜qāranā€™, is normally translated as ā€˜shoneā€™, and yet the verb is derived from the Hebrew word for ā€œhorn.ā€ Accordingly, Jeromeā€™s fourth century Vulgate translation renders the verse, ā€œcornuta esset facies suaā€ ā€“ ā€œhis face was horned.ā€

Yes, itā€™s probably a mistranslation, but we shouldnā€™t let that detract from the insight that Mosesā€™ closeness to God had an effect on his body that the Torah had trouble putting into words, just as the Gospels struggle to explain what really happened to Jesus in His transfiguration.

My Tribute to the Syrian Arab Army

Father Dave here, and Iā€™m still grieving the collapse of Syria, and the ascendency of one-time Al Qaeda leader, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, to the countryā€™s leadership.

Iā€™ve been fearing for my many Syrian friends. Iā€™ve been praying for their safety ā€“ perhaps most of all for my dear brother, Dr Hassoun, formerly the former Grand Mufti of Syria. Iā€™ve also been feeling that someone should be paying tribute to the Syrian Arab Army ā€“ to all the young men and women who laid down their lives over a period of about 12 years, trying to prevent what eventually happened.
