Hana Goda and Omar Assar emerged the new champions of Africa at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, held in Tunis, Tunisia on Thursday.
While the younger Goda dethroned fellow Egyptian Dina Meshref 4-2 to clinch the Women's Singles title, their compatriot, Assar, narrowly edged Nigeria's Quadri Aruna in a 4-3 battle of the superstars of African table tennis in the Men's Singles final matchup.
For three days, 50 players from Algeria, Benin Republic, Cameroon, Congo DR, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Egypt, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zambia competed in the tournament, which also served as qualifiers for the 2025 ITTF World Cup.
In the Women's Singles, Goda started her day with a comeback win over Meshref. After falling behind 2-0, Goda rallied to win 4-2, reclaiming her title. Meshref initially dominated with scores of 11-9 and 11-5, but Goda regained her composure, winning the next four games 11-9, 11-6, 11-6, and 12-10.
A relieved Goda credited her mental coach for the comeback, stating, "I think the credit must go to my mental coach who advised me that even when I am down, I should never give up. This motivated me to come back in the game. I must also commend my opponent for putting up a good performance, and I am happy with the victory."
In the Men's Singles final, Assar had to dig deep to overcome defending champion Aruna in a close 4-3 match (11-3, 14-16, 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6).
After the match, Assar described his win as the most challenging of his career, saying, "This is the toughest tournament, and I am so exhausted from all the matches I played in Tunis. I thank my teammates and our host, Tunisia, for being a good host."

Starting Tuesday, February 25, the competition for the continental slots in the Men’s and Women’s World Cup will be intense. Semifinalists will earn their places on the flight to Macao, China, in April.
In the Men’s Singles, 29 players will compete for four coveted spots in the global tournament in China, while 21 players will vie for the four tickets in the Women’s Singles.
Defending champions, Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna and Egypt’s Dina Meshref, face a Herculean task to retain their titles against formidable opponents eager to dethrone them at the beautiful El-Menzah Sports Hall. Aruna aims for his sixth title alongside Egypt’s Omar Assar, who is also targeting his sixth laurel in Tunis. They will contend with rising stars like Tunisia’s Wassim Essid, Nigeria’s Matthew Kuti, Cameroon’s Batix Ylane, and other experienced players already in Tunis.
Meshref, the most successful player in the competition, seeks to surpass her nine titles in Tunis. However, she must elevate her game to maintain her dominance. Africa’s highest-ranked female player, Hana Goda of Egypt, will target her third title after dual victories in Lagos 2022 and Nairobi 2023. While the two Egyptians may face off against each other at some stage of the competition, they must keep an eye out for other contenders seeking to rewrite the record books in Tunis through stunning upsets.

ITTF Africa reconstitutes Committee, Commission to drive new agenda
To advance its new agenda for the next four years, the newly elected executive of the African Table Tennis Federation (ITTF Africa) has reconstituted 11 standing committees and commissions with a fresh mandate to promote the sport across the continent.
According to Andrew Mudibo, Executive Vice President and chairman of the Reconstitution Committee, the reconstitution process began towards the end of 2024. "The Executive expects all committees and commissions to be fully functional, significantly assisting the Executive in its work and decision-making for the growth and development of table tennis in Africa,” he said.
Mudibo emphasized the importance of commitment from committee members: "The leaders and members of the committees are capable of doing an excellent job, which should make Africa proud. We anticipate positive results. Each committee is expected to work based on its given terms of reference. We are looking for annual reports and monthly and quarterly reports, which will be shared with the Executive Committee of ATTF. The selection process has been structured to ensure that the results speak for the work being done,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Athletes Commission is yet to be constituted, as athletes are expected to choose their representatives. "A total of 11 committees were reconstituted with a fresh mandate, and only one committee remains to be established—the Athletes Commission. The ITTF Africa Executive has agreed that athletes will select their leaders. Guidelines on this process will be provided soon," he added.
President of ITTF Africa, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, urged the committees and commissions to be active, noting that the executive would review their activities annually to assess their effectiveness.
