As you are probably aware, since discovering Riyoko in early 2023, I've been violating Japanese customs and copyright laws while recording and sharing most of the live Riyoko content on this channel. I started slowly in 2023 and went into overdrive in 2024, perhaps getting a little carried away. I saw all the forces working against Riyoko, and I set out to properly document her and set the record straight about what kind of gifted artist she really is. Japan is a very interesting country that's insulated from the world via its laws and regulations and has very strange copyright laws for live music scene - venues own and enforce the rights to all live recordings on their premises BUT most of them don't do anything with those recordings! They stream shows and after 2-4 weeks after airing they go away never to see the light of day again - they don't release them for sale on optical media and most digital archives go away after a grace period. I was somewhat respectful to the venues in how I uploaded Riyoko's material - I would wait 5-6 weeks after the show takes place before uploading, so I was never in conflict with digital streaming distributions, and I would also credit the venues and all the artists. I didn't just upload videos, I did extensive research and documentation work on this channel.
Everything I did on this channel was for the greater good with utmost respect, admiration, passion, and care toward Riyoko. It was honestly the most passionate thing I've ever done in my entire life. And somehow because of that I even got a rare opportunity to cross the artist-fan boundary and hang out with and befriend Riyoko in June 2024 during her visit to New York. On this amazing journey I learned many things about my own self and became a better person. I also made friends with fellow passionate Riyoko fans in Japan and other parts of the world (USA, France, Italy, Portugal, ...). Music is truly a universal language that connects people across cultural and language barriers. I don't regret a single thing that I've done or happened on this journey. I'd do it all over again!
Things that I learned through Riyoko:
1. Greater appreciation for piano as an instrument, musical artistry, and improvisation.
2. Being selfless and putting others more deserving before my own self.
3. Being more spontaneous in everything. For example, just waking up and saying "today I'm going to go do so and so" and just going and doing it.
4. Photography and videography. I recorded some Riyoko shows in NY on my 2-year-old mirrorless camera with standard zoom lens but wasn't happy with the results in low-light, so I researched cameras, lenses, and better understood optical physics. I've since upgraded my camera and lens setups.
5. Intermittent fasting (eating once a day, usually later in the evening). Riyoko doesn't do that but when she was in NY, I didn't have time for breakfast or lunches in the mornings, but we enjoyed nice dinners (usually at late-night shows). I got used to it and this habit stuck with me since. Now I only eat dinners and it feels great!
Upcoming changes to the channel:
1. Most of the existing Riyoko videos will become unlisted and won't be searchable, however they should remain accessible via playlists on channel home.
2. New live Riyoko material probably won't be shared here unless I record it myself with my own camera where it's permitted to do so.
3. Channel title may change to disassociate from Riyoko's channel.

リヨコを通して学んだこと

4. 写真とビデオ撮影。標準ズームレンズを装着したミラーレスカメラでNYでのリヨコのショーを録画したが、低照度での結果に満足できなかったので、カメラやレンズを研究し、光学物理学をより深く理解した。それ以来、カメラとレンズのセットアップをアップグレードした。
5. 断続的な断食（1日1回、通常は夕方以降に食事をする）。リヨコはそんなことはしないが、彼女がNYにいた頃、朝は朝食も昼食もとる時間がなかったが、素敵な夕食を楽しんだ（たいてい深夜のショーで）。私はそれに慣れ、以来この習慣が抜けなくなった。今では夕食しか食べなくなり、とても気分がいい！

'The Moments' was recorded back in February 2024 during the same session as 'One Another Day' (2024) album https://youtu.be/diex9kOWiAk that was just released in September 2024. The album features only two of Riyoko's originals ('Endless Sorrow' and 'Dream Waltz' a classically inspired piece) and mostly filled with Riyoko's interpretations of jazz standards. However, a sharp music-loving eye will notice that it also features Riyoko's jazz arrangements of two advanced level classical works: 'La Campanella' by Niccolò Paganini (first transcribed to piano by Franz Liszt) and Etude № 1 'Prelude' Op 40 by Nikolai Kapustin (super-fun jazzy Soviet classical composer).

A lot of you probably already know this but I wanted to share with those that don't. Riyoko has been a regular pianist on early morning TV program THE TIME on Japanese TV station TBS, playing viewer requests. She plays several requests per show and is exposed to about 500 new songs per year just through this job alone. Requests come in and she needs to perform them on a short notice. Riyoko got this job in 2021 when live shows were scarce due to COVID-19 lockdowns. She maintained this job to this day, appearing on TV on early mornings of Mondays and Thursdays every week. This is all in addition to averaging 2 album releases per year since 2021 and supporting them by playing about 100 live shows per year all over Japan. Often it happens that she would wake up early at 2am for her TV job, then play a full show late at night on the same day. Riyoko is a busy bee.
I wanted to share this so that:
1. you understand how hard Riyoko works, she basically has another regular job
2. you see how she dresses appropriately for the job, completely covered up neck down in long dresses
3. compared to her live performances, here on TV she's completely grounded and doesn't try to stand out or show off - she's very humble
This isn't her show, so she acts accordingly in all aspects. On my channel, I have received dozens of comments from Japanese audience saying things along the lines of "Wow! I also watch her on TV, but this is different! I want you to play like this on TV!" (but there were also a couple of silly comments asking her to dress on TV just like she dresses for her live shows)

I'm not the person in videos on my channel. She's renowned but under-represented Japanese jazz pianist & composer Riyoko Takagi 高木里代子 (@riyopiano riyoko.jp). I know a musical genius when I hear one, so Riyo turned this engineer into a music researcher. This "gold mine" of a channel is the result and dedicated to this magnificent independent artist and her fans. Here you will find an abundance of live Riyo content I streamed and recorded and transcriptions. I had a pleasure of spending unforgettable time with Riyo in June 2024 during her visit to NY. I also confirmed my long suspicion and the source behind her natural talent & spontaneity - a unique case of auditory-visual color-profile-varying mood-controlled synesthesia. Yes, Riyo sees music in colors that change based on her mood.
