Hey Porsche 968 Fans & Owners! I recently got a request to add some 968-themed merchandise to the apparel store and I'm happy to share that I was able to recreate the timing belt system featuring the 968's hydraulic belt tensioner. Let me know what you think! Cheers!

NC944er is featured on a podcast! I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with Rob Kibbe of the ā€œMuscle Car Place Podcast Network,ā€ where we covered a variety of Porsche 944 topics and some insights into the NC944er YouTube channel. Rob is a lifelong automotive enthusiast, but a first-time Porsche owner, as he and his 15-year-old son take on a 1985.5 944 they acquired on Bring a Trailer in January of this year. See what lies ahead for Rob and the advice I can offer him as they embark on their ownership journey. If podcasts are your thing and youā€™ve got an hour to kill, check it out belowā€¦

Hey 944 fans! Iā€™ve been searching for some 944-inspired merchandise thatā€™s centered more on the mechanical/engineering aspect of the cars, but have found the market to be underservedā€¦ so I spent WAY too many hours designing some of my own. I thought it would be cool to share it with you all, so itā€™s now available through the NC944er store on FourthWall. Iā€™ve set the margins about as low as the retailer would allow, around $3-$4 over production cost on each item. Check them out and let me know what you guys think of the designs. Iā€™ve placed two orders so far and the production quality aligns well with the cost. Products are printed in and shipped from the US with decent turnaround times for custom one-off production. Both orders were quoted 7-10 days for delivery, where one arrived 2 days early and the other 3 days early. Iā€™ve washed and dried the shirts a couple times and the printing is holding up well. Not too bad!

I built a thing to hold a thing! More specifically, I built a jig to hold the torque tube so that it can be hammered and wrenched on with precision while replacing the bearings. Probably overkill, but I figured if the tube was really locked down in place, it would reduce the risk of damaging parts or myself in the process. The transaxle end is bolted to the jig and the clutch end is boxed in with 2x4s. The jig has some longer ā€œoutriggersā€ on one end that can be braced against a wall or other immovable object for hammering and pushing the drive shaft in and out. Iā€™ve also got the 6ā€™ steel pipe, threaded rod, and hardware to remove and install the new bearingsā€¦ ANDā€¦ a set of Super Bearings from Black Sea R&D are on hand, ready to be installed. They are a thing of beauty that will never be seen again after installation. šŸ˜‚

Thereā€™s nothing quite like clean parts! The clutch housing, ring gear, and flywheel have all been glass bead blasted and they came out great. I coated the exterior of the clutch housing with a high temperature satin clear to maintain its newly restored condition. The flywheel has been resurfaced, with two thousandths removed from the friction surface and the step down was reset to its prior measurement. I added some customizations to the timing marks on the flywheel and clutch housing, where red enamel paint has been applied to the OT line and the alignment tab, which should make future timing belt work a lot easier. The flywheel was so badly oxidized previously that I could barely see the OT line. šŸ˜‚

I had the opportunity to speak with Bob Ingram this weekend at Southpoint Porscheā€™s ā€œFirst Saturdayā€ event and show him my 944 restoration. You may not think that the founder and steward of arguably the largest and most well-kept Porsche collection in America would get terribly excited about a 944, but Bob was impressed with the work I had done to date. He mentioned that he currently has a 1988 944 Turbo S ā€œSilver Roseā€ with only 704 miles on it, making it an indisputable unicorn among 944s. šŸ¤£ His advice for me was to keep the car as original as possible, to not sell it, and of course to drive it! There were a number of other 944s there as well and it was great to check out peoplesā€™ builds and some of the work they had done on their cars. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Is it time for new wheels? My set of Design 90 wheels are overdue for a restoration and the tires, despite having ample tread, will be aging out next year, so I thought Iā€™d consider some new options in addition to a wheel restoration. The 944 has already departed from its original state (15ā€ Phone Dials), which allows some flexibility, but alternatives like the ā€œTurbo Twistā€ and ā€œBoxsterā€ wheels modernizes the look of the 944 a bit too much for my taste. Here are some options Iā€™m consideringā€¦ thoughts?

ā— 16ā€ Design 90s ā€“ Restored in Porsche Silver ā€“ Wheel Weights F:18.7lbs. / R:21.8lbs. ā€“ Cost: $450

ā— 16ā€ Design 90s ā€“ Restored in Satin Black ā€“ Wheel Weights F:18.7lbs. / R:21.8lbs. ā€“ Cost: $450

ā— 16" PAG/Campagnolo (40802 Replica) ā€“ Satin Anthracite ā€“ Wheel Weights F:17.2lbs. / R:18.5lbs. ā€“ Cost: $1,616

I finally swapped out my modified Porsche 930 ā€œshark finā€ style stone guards for a set of the more 944-esque ā€œD shapedā€ stone guards in black textured vinyl that I picked up on eBay for $17. The leading edges on these reproduction decals were strangely curved, whereas the factory decals feature a sloping but straight front edge, so I leveled off a little material with a razor to match the factory look. I think this style is better suited to the aesthetics of the 944 and they turned out pretty good!

Hey there 944 fans! Let me start by saying that my intent in creating this DIY channel has never come from a desire to monetize it in any way, it was solely to connect with and help other 944 owners repair their cars for the betterment of the overall 944 community, and it will stay that way. That said, more than a handful of people have proactively expressed an interest in donating to the ongoing body of work I have created here on YouTube, and that can now be facilitated through the below Patreon link if you so choose. Donations are NEVER expected for anyone to enjoy my content, but they are certainly appreciated, and their entirety will be put towards continued funding of the 944 restoration project as you know it today. Thank you all for such an overwhelmingly positive and supportive response to my content! I hope to see some more 944's out on the road because of it! Cheers!

For any 944 owners thinking about changing motor oils or wondering if your brand of choice is up to the task of protecting your engine, I spent a few hours searching, emailing, and calling many of the major manufacturers to determine the zinc and phosphorus levels of some of the more popular oil options on the market today. Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate or ZDDP is the additive that protects the flat-tappet camshafts and lifters from premature wear that would ultimately result in lost engine power and reduced efficiency. Since zinc levels have been gradually reduced in most modern oils, an extra consideration for the 944 is selecting a blend that contains approximately 1,200 ppm zinc. This topic will be highlighted in the next video regarding oil changes.
