Greetings all, and I hope this finds you well, or "well enough" during this pandemic. To what degree you have been impacted is variable, for sure. I can't complain, but I've also had my own plates full at times. Be that as it may, I just thought I'd say hello, and for those checking the Raising Monarchs series, plenty is coming out now and in the near future. This year, I've put a strong focus on Milkweed topics. I wanted to do it last year, but the outdoor rearing modifications took priority. This year, though, it seems my plan for Milkweed topics is running smoothly. I currently have three experiments running. A fourth is soon to start (with ideas for a fifth and sixth germinating...) and some of the earlier ones will be wrapping up, well, around the same time as each other. So, you can expect on the horizon these to be making publication in the coming weeks.
Three days ago, a Raising Monarchs episode on Milkweed Categories was released, ICYMI. (Featured in this post.)
In addition, tomorrow at 9:15am EST / 6:15am PST, a new episode will make its appearance, for those interested.
I hope that your season is going well! Stay safe! Stay sanitary! And Plant Milkweed!

So, I did it... I am now on Instagram as "mrlundscience".

You're welcome to follow me, but please understand, I'll be using Instagram mostly to be in contact with some old friends from my past.
If people have questions about Monarchs, please continue to place such questions in the comments sections of the Raising Monarchs videos. (I won't really be answering such questions through Instagram.) This helps for a few reasons:
1) All comments that are new wind up in one place for me to be able to read and reply to in my YouTube account.
2) Some people read through the comments on the Raising Monarchs videos and can benefit from seeing your question asked, and seeing what answers have been provided, be it an answer from myself or someone else.

I'm looking forward to this coming week. Got some vids I'm excited for you to see! Ciao!

Hey gang!
Very sorry to have had to do this, but I re-uploaded the most recent Raising Monarchs, "Captive Rearing And Migration". While there weren't factual errors, there were some things that, the way they were worded, could be interpreted the intended way, or, could be misinterpreted. To avoid confusion, I edited things a bit differently, and added a few parts so that what was being described is more clear. Most won't notice much of a difference, but for specific, technical details, this definitely sits better with me. Below is the new version. Also, the next Raising Monarchs, currently in the works, will be taking viewers through what outdoor rearing might look like. Stay tuned! And thank you for helping out the Monarch Butterflies. Numbers are up this year!

New Raising Monarchs is being filmed tomorrow...
In the meantime, I'd love for those out there to check out the beautiful Common Snapping Turtle I met, who REALLY needed to get off of the highway!

Greetings Monarch enthusiasts!
I wanted to give a brief comment on the recent news articles that came out about a study that showed home reared Monarchs to be less effective for migration. When that news hit, many sent it my way, and there were definitely some yellow and red alarms going off for people. When new evidence arises, if you know anything about me, you know that evidence is my currency, bread and butter, and that I'm always willing to change my views if the evidence warrants it. However, it would seem like many of the news articles that covered this had headlines that ranged from passive (New Study Unlocks Hints To Monarch Migration) to very alarmist (Have Hobbyists Doomed The Monarch?). Within one day, I was in touch with one of the authors of the study, Dr. Marcus Kronforst. Him and I had a very pleasant phone conversation, and he's such an awesome guy! For full details as to what the study means for us, please give me some time to put the video together, but yes, the next Raising Monarchs will flesh this out. But, to not keep you in suspense, and hopefully put many at ease, some bottom line things:
1) Dr. Kronforst does not feel that home rearing of Monarchs is a concern, but rather, an important activity and endeavor.
2) There are some things we can do that are optional that can help the Monarchs we raise have a better chance of migrating (assuming it is that time of the season).
3) As it's not currently the migratory season, there's nothing you need to be doing differently right now, and the video will be out much sooner than when the migratory season begins.
4) If you want to watch a Monarch eclose from its chrysalis while you wait, well hey...it's right down there after the end of this sentence!

Not sure as to precisely when, but look for a new Raising Monarchs vid this week. Currently being edited. Soon following that, a new Debunk The Funk, recently finished, all about what an "Ad Hoc" hypothesis is, and how to notice them when you're confronting some of the bunk out there.
If you haven't checked out the Debunk The Funk series, it's devoted to not only testing out claims from time to time, but how to develop critical thinking skills. And there's some *major* episodes that will be happening for it this summer. Much of the footage is already shot.
Check out Debunk The Funk #1, and see if it's your kind of thing:
