THE STANDARDS, No. 01 — Welcome to the newest OJC series, in which we school you on jazz standards in hopes of transforming your repertoire and offering a few pieces of jazz history you may have missed in your previous studies. First up, “A NIGHT IN TUNISIA.”

• Written by trumpeter #DizzyGillespie in 1941 at Kelly’s Stables in #Manhattan, this swing-bebop standard uses syncopation, Afro-Cuban rhythms and tritone substitutions to create a mysterious feeling. The song also introduced the “non-walking bass line,” now a common stylistic addition to modern compositions.

• “A Night In Tunisia” was first recorded in 1944 with the Gillespie-Pettiford Quintet at the Onyx Club in New York City. Both #SarahVaughan and #EllaFitzgerald recorded well-known lyric versions of the track (interestingly, each with a different set of lyrics), and other notable renditions have been recorded by Art Blakey and Lee Morgan, Art Pepper, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, the Bud Powell Trio, and Sonny Rollins.

• Gillespie’s own 1946 version (recorded for RCA Victor) was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004, but more than 900 renditions have been documented over the decades — making it one of the most recognized tracks in jazz.

Throughout his career he collaborated with greats like Erkstine Hawkins, Wild Bill Davis, and Louie Bellson, as well as the Quincy Jones Orchestra.
