In addition to my Buy Me a Coffee page I have decided to create another purely to blog about the Essonne, the French region where I have lived for the past 27 years, for other English speakers.

Some of you may know that I also teach English 1 to 1, which I started back in 2013. So in short this page will be purely a blog about my adopted region, the clash of cultures and occasionally the English language. If you would like to view it or comment on articles, then you can find it here buymeacoffee.com/essonne.english

Thanks in advance for your visit.

Went off to Lidl this morning to do the weekly shop. Left at just after 8.30am after de-icing Mega Breadvan. Visibility was poor on my short jaunt. With the windows freezing slightly on the inside and steaming up.
The car park looks empty, but in fact the bulk of the cars were parked behind me, right near the entrance into the store.
Personally I don't really understand why people have to be right next to the entrance, not like it is a long walk from where I usually park.

Took the opportunity to do a few videos with my phone, as I plan on doing a video about visiblity and blindspots when driving my van. More issues than you would think in such a small vehicle.

After doing two thirds of my latest video, the review of 2024, I realised that the cordless mic wasn't working. The link between the mic and receiver was fine, but it seems the camera itself wasn't picking up the sound, even if the receiver was plugged in.

So I'm going to have to do it all again... It was of course unscripted.
Had a small sweary moment and decided to leave it for today.

Decided to do the weekly shop at Lidl today, normally I'd go on a Thursday, but I have been demotivated over the last few days.

Yesterday I was stuggling to plan lessons and basically binge watched TV, in fact that's what I've done the last couple of days. As well as plan out my next Youtube video and various household things.

So today Lidl wasn't very busy and I didn't have much shopping to do, probably around two thirds of the usual shop. Picked up a craft kit for Mme MB, who is working from home this morning. Plus a bendable multiplug. I like Lidl for the weird stuff they can sell sometimes. Mme MB has created a crafting/sewing corner in the basement - so those can go down there.

Reversing out of the parking space, I nearly hit a car which was speeding into the car park and swerved around/overtook me. I was actually into the lane and was about drive away. Shows you some people don't seem to care about causing an accident. A lot of people drive so fast in that car park plus there are no directional arrows or even a speed limit sign.
I saw them park right next to the store entrance door (was it worth getting a place so they didn't have to walk far?). A woman and I suppose her husband where getting out as I drove up. I glared at them and they seemed to look uncomfortable as I drove past them.

Perhaps someone should tell Lidl about their car parK?

First of all Bonne Année everyone. I have just been chatting in the comments with Patricks Models & Transport and Bugler75 about editing and posting videos. So I just wanted to do this shout out to sound out with you what your opinions are.

As a rule of thumb I know most successful channels post once or even several times a week. However, I know (from experience) that editing video can be very time consuming depending on your own production values. Personally I feel I can't keep up with that frequency as it seems like other things in life get in the way. I would also feel guilty about spending too much time editing when family things or work needs to be done (I teach English part time 5 times a week and we have two kids). So I work on a video as and when. But are production values important? How do you strike a balance between quality and getting the video out?

Also, I've long noticed (and have read on various sites) that posting a video is best done on a Wednesday or Sunday evening? So what exactly is that about do you think? Why can't you just post whenever you feel like it?

Lastly I saw in a video the other day that it is best to post your video onto Youtube (and the community tab), then hold fire for 7 days before sharing it to the various platforms and services. The theory being that you let the Youtube algorithm do its thing before posting to a wider audience. I tried this with my last video (the one about Royan & Cognac). I'm not so sure it worked.

Anyway, sorry for the wordy post, I just thought it would be interesting for us all to spark some ideas off each other and perhaps break the various myths about posting videos? Or not?

Bonne soirée from us in France and thanks in advance for your input which I hope will benefit a few people out there.

It is my birthday soon, so I've decided to treat myself (ourselves as I'm sure Rémy would love to play with it) to a drone. So, readers, I wanted to ask... What is your experience with drones? The best? The cheapest? I'd love to hear about your experiences.
The idea is to make filming a bit easier for drive bys and walk arounds. But it would also be interesting to do low level aerial footage. Afterall, I don't really want to go down the road of having to get a flying permit or whatever.
Have got my eye on one particular model, but am considering other options before I take the plunge.
