This is for all the doctors who are preparing for their MBA interviews and are wondering about their Why MBA? answer. Having said that, even non-commerce/management graduates should be able to derive some benefit from this! Here we go!
You have to talk about influences that have made you think about an MBA as a career option. In my interviews, I usually stuck to hospital administration and the need to streamline operations that precede actual delivery of service and are often overlooked. The impact of these decisions is at a macro level (had a few examples ready for this from my college/primary health centers/OTs) which made me appreciate the business models in spite of not having any formal exposure to management education. I made it a point to read up on business models and overall organisation strategy (had some examples ready just in case I got cross questioned). Over time I realised that business management was what I was most passionate about and so I decided to build formal expertise on that front.
I used to be asked if I would be okay leaving the noble profession. I used to answer it by saying that I would be saving lives by not practicing (of course I could pull it off because of a pleasant demeanour in general). And then on a serious note, I would say that I would be impacting lives in general (again, had a couple of examples handy) and so over the next 30 odd years of my career, it would definitely compound into something substantial. That was generally good enough for the interviewers. Sometimes I got quizzed about my choice of specialisation but I skirted that question by talking about going into the MBA program with an open mind and giving myself the opportunity to experience formal learning and industry exposure post which I would be in a good position to take a call. Depending on the panelists, I would also talk about my experience at Pagalguy and how I had seen students entering with a rigid mindset and then realise their calling a bit later than when they would have liked. No further questions post this much of gyaan!
