The sauna is said to have been in Finland for 1500 years. In the old days, it seems that it was used for drying hemp and smoking meat. The prototype of the sauna was called "Smoke Sau (SAVUSAUNA sub-sauna)", which filled the room with smoke instead of hot air. The temperature is low and it is heated with firewood, so it took 8 hours to get warm.
It is said that one in three people in Finland has a sauna. It is unthinkable for Finns to live without a sauna. Most homes have a sauna, but for those who cannot set up a sauna at home, there are multiple communal saunas nearby so that you can take a bath on a regular basis. Also, many people have summer cottages, and the cottages always have a sauna, so I take a leisurely weekend trip to the cottage. The sauna is an essential part of Finnish people, a place of family gathering and relaxation, and a social gathering place for many.
