A few days ago, we introduced our AI helper, Amy, as part of our focus on AI in medical interpretation. This month, we turn to ethics: a fundamental part of interpretation that highlights the human touch. While AI can assist, itâs the ethical decisions interpreters make that foster trust, guide complex situations, and help navigate those gray areas where human judgment prevails. To fully grasp and apply these principles, itâs important to recognize the work of key organizations like the NCIHC, IMIA, and CHIA, whose ethical guidelines continue to shape our profession today.
The NCIHC (National Council on Interpreting in Health Care) began as a working group in 1994 and was formally established in 1998 with a mission to promote language access in healthcare across the U.S. With input from medical interpreters, advocates, and researchers, they published the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care in 2004 and the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care in 2005, emphasizing key principles like confidentiality, impartiality, and respect, among others.
Founded in 1986, the IMIA (International Medical Interpreters Association) is the oldest and largest medical interpretation association in the U.S., with over 2,000 members. IMIAâs work includes defining educational requirements for medical interpreters and promoting research in cross-cultural communication. They first established their Code of Ethics in 1987 and multiple editions of the Standards of Practice were published between 1995 and 2007. These documents have been translated into languages including Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, and Korean, highlighting the associationâs global reach.
The CHIA (California Healthcare Interpreting Association), founded in 1996, advocates for patients with Limited English Proficiency and supports interpreters in improving language services. CHIAâs 2002 California Standards for Healthcare Interpreters offers comprehensive guidelines on ethical principles, protocols, and interpreter roles. The association also hosts annual conferences with educational sessions and presentations.
These organizations provide invaluable support to the interpreting community by setting ethical standards and promoting best practices. Together, they help interpreters navigate the professionâs challenges with greater clarity and representation.
