12/12/72 Cardiff - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 7/10

Tonight’s tape is very short indeed. We’ve had some pretty cut up ones in the past, but seriously I’ve heard versions of Whole Lotta Love longer than this. Speaking of which, that’s where we start here, 15 minutes of a seemingly fantastic medley that I wish I could hear in full! After that it’s all encores, but we really get the full treatment here nonetheless. A fiery Immigrant Song opens up this mini show, followed by a shredderiffic Heartbreaker. The band then takes a short break before coming out again for Jonsey’s mellotron solo, then they finish with a fabulous version of Thank You. Unfortunately that’s it, not much to go off of for me to properly rate, maybe a 7?

Highlights are: Probably everything we have!

12/8/72 Manchester - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 9/10

Well after multiple outings in Newcastle and then to Scotland to do the same to Glasgow, we return to Manchester after over a year for another spot on performance - renowned as one of this tour’s finest! To say I’m excited would be an understatement to say the least, hearing the Rock and Roll drum intro gave me some initial goosebumps. Importantly, Robert is giving it his all after a 4 day rest for his voice, probably the best version of this song on the tour due to this. Over The Hills and Far Away is further evidence of the band being on, Page and Bonham interplay is top notch so you can tell we’re in for a treat, not to mention that fabulous solo!

Black Dog is even more fabulous than before, I’m loving the clean and focused playing from Page and the thunderous drumming of Bonham, even though a review claimed that he sounded like he was bashing on boxes! Lol.

Misty Mountain Hop is pretty good here, but
Since I’ve Been Loving You is certainly up there with the greatest Page performances of all time. His guitar work here is absolutely unbelievable, tough to fairly compare this with the former song, but I definitely think that this is better and a highlight of the show!!!

I think that Dancing Days is great. This one has a phenomenal groove from Bonham and Jones, plus Page and Playing are likewise excellent. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp is decent but nothing too special.

The Song Reminds The Same is no doubt a fabulous rendition, having some of the spiciest instrumentals this whole show. This bootleg has a great sound quality compared to others, and it definitely works in this song’s favour. The Rain Song is also one of the highlights of tonight.

This version of Dazed is quite incredible. Again, we have some scarily tight instrumentals from all band members, with Plant sounding better than usual, we have for one of the greatest versions of this song this tour. The ramp up section is great as usual, great bow solo, and then some unbelievably killer guitar workouts! Page even manages to incorporate a bit of Walter’s Walk in there like the versions from June earlier in 1972! Yet another big win for this Dazed is for sure the great little Crunge bit, followed by another remarkable funky jam. After more killer, soloing we return to the main theme with a huge crescendo! Great job they did on this!

Stairway is a truly great version tonight. I loved the solo most though, really spicy Page playing!!! Brilliant work from everyone else though, Bonham is great!

Whole Lotta Love is even more funky than ever!! The band incorporates a portion of “It’s Your Thing” into the jam after an excellent theremin freakout - great jam. Instead of the usual Boogie, “Bottle Up and Go” begins a fast and furious medley, Plant eventually starts going on about something or other in a bit of improv lyrics. Following that, the instruments slowly fade with him rambling still, then Page explodes into the actual “Boogie Chillen” part! A little rarity here, (only performed 2 other times) “Say Mama” is played right before a powerful “Let’s Have a Party” - heavy stuff!!! After the intense, slow blues of “I Can’t Quit You” to finish off, Plant teases a bit of “The Battle Of Evermore” in the reprise to the main song, I have to say also that his vocals in this were unbelievable, the guy was out of his mind!!

The encores consist of an out of order Immigrant Song and Heartbreaker, both excellent highlights for me. The show ends with a fiery performance of Communication Breakdown, short but sweet and the only version of the tour! This show is probably my favourite so far, I loved every moment and I don’t think it’ll be easy to top (although I have high hopes for the Ally Pally shows!)

12/4/72 Glasgow - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 8.6/10

I think that last night’s performance was actually one of the best I’ve heard recently, but can the band do better tonight? The tape here is much nicer than the past ones on this tour, despite being overloaded with bass and having cuts, it’s got a lively and explosive atmosphere and that compliments the performance well. Rock and Roll is decent, even though on this particular recording there’s not a lot of it - I doubt I’m missing out on much though. Over The Hills and Far Away has that same intensity and brilliant instrumentals as before, great version with a great solo from Mr Jim.

Black Dog is pretty good, but like OTHAFA it earns it’s right to exist from that solo alone, Page is on absolute fire tonight and in a way where his playing seems quite destructive and unhinged.

Speaking of unhinged, the power and energy in this version of Misty Mountain Hop is not to be ignored. The band seem very excited here, and their attitude was definitely the same last night, it just sounds crazier here because of the tape. Bonzo is still feeling the same way with those excellent fills, wow! Since I’ve Been Loving You is unreal, the intro solo caught me off guard massively, incredible guitar playing from Pagey. Rob doesn’t even sound bad at all, making for a really good listen actually.

Dancing Days again isn’t as good as either of the Newcastle versions, but it sounds full of power. Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp is the same again I’m afraid, Bonzo shouts something at the end so… ha ha?

The Song Remains The Same is almost as good as last night, certainly a bombastic one when it comes to the drums, woah this is epic! I think The Rain Song is one of the most beautiful or ethereal renditions I’ve ever heard, and perhaps the best of the whole tour?!

It’s very hard for me to pick between this Dazed and last night’s. I love this tape in all it’s distorted glory, it makes for a very heavy intro perfect for this monster performance! The ramp up section and the bow solo are starting to flow into each other better with the little interlude that’s been added, Plant again singing some lines from “Cowgirl In The Sand”. The first workout and The Crunge are to DIE FOR, I love it! There is a seriously sick and heavy riffing section afterwards that flows right into a ferocious funky jam, Bonzo hits the ride bell a few times. After another fiery workout for Page, and the mars riff, we return to the main theme and finish with a brilliant outro that has him going ballistic!!! Killer version.

Stairway is incredible, probably better than last night’s but I need to stop comparing things and just appreciate the inspirational creativity, for example the superb solo!

Whole Lotta Love is of course a masterpiece. This tape makes it sound very big and bold so that’s good. A unique moment is where Plant pokes fun at an audience member who has some sort of light while singing! Apparently he doesn’t think the guy paid to get in there!! The medley continues the energetic feel, Boogie Chillen is very fast and Let’s Have a Party has some more vocals about the “man with the torch”. Stuck On You is the only rarity played here, the slow blues jam is a brilliant version of I Can’t Quit You Baby. Great performance, but fans wanted more.

The band only comes out for one encore, Heartbreaker, which is an incredible rendition. Maybe they were tight for time so they didn’t do multiple encores, the fans clearly wanted some more music though as they reportedly clapped and cheered and screamed for close to half an hour afterwards! This actually (and rather hilariously) lead an attendee to write a sort of article titled “Disgusted At Zeppelin” - also complaining about the “constant plugging of their new album”. Well anyway that was a brill show, maybe not quite as epic as last night but still epic nonetheless!

12/3/72 Glasgow - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 8.8/10

Well Led Zeppelin certainly didn’t disappoint in Newcastle, instead setting a very high standard for the rest of this tour! Something I was looking forward to in particular regarding UK 72 were the two nights in Glasgow. Well here we are! Thankfully this tape is much better that 12/1’s, albeit a bit boomy (it was discovered fairly recently actually!). There are some microphone issues during Rock and Roll, but it gets cleared up pretty quickly, so we can hear Rob’s okay vocals. Actually by Over The Hills and Far Away he’s doing pretty well, it’s an insane version anyway though, with unbelievable drums and bass as the backing track for the phenomenal solo Page gives, perhaps best than the others from this tour so far!

Black Dog is brilliant tonight, and I thought that 12/1 had a great one, excellent playing all around, with another ferocious solo and drumming that stands out for sure, GREAT STUFF!!!

Page has a little flub in Misty Mountain Hop, similar to what he did at the end of OTHAFA earlier, but makes up for it with a clean solo, I have to give Bonham even more praise for those fills there though, wow!!! Since I’ve Been Loving You is more of the same thing, fabulous instrumentals from everyone and Plant is doing his best. Such a great drum sound to be amazing even in bootlegs.

Dancing Days is good here, quite powerful but not as memorable as the Newcastle renditions in my opinion! Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp suffers a similar fate, I’m much more excited as always for what’s coming up next!

So yeah, right here we have a mighty fine rendition of The Song Remains The Same, absolutely inspired and on the same level as the previous shows, maybe even the Japanese ones! The guitar and drums take centre stage, so what’s new, well Jonsey is playing great as usual! A cool moment is Plant sounding good on the “California Sunlight” verse. The Rain Song is gorgeous, one of the most delicate and beautiful things I’ve ever heard, thank you so much Zeppelin…

Dazed is yet another banger, having the best ramp up section I’ve heard so far on this tour, Page is going wild. Just before we get that beautiful bow solo transition, there’s a fast heavy jam with Bonzo hitting a ride bell or cowbell with some cool patterns! The Achilles Last Stand riff is properly taking shape here, Plant sings some lyrics from “Cowgirl in The Sand” over it. The workouts are golden and The Crunge is obviously fantastic. Plant shouts about James Brown while Page plays a creepy ascending riff and then they blast into the funk jam. Everything about this performance rules!!!At the end Rob shouts out “John Bonham, what a drummer!!” - damn right mate.

Stairway is absolutely beautiful here, incredible solo from Page and even a great performance of the coda from Rob, this show is amazing oh my lord.

Whole Lotta Love is unbelievably heavy and overall brilliant. The medley includes “That’s Alright Mama”, that alone makes it S Tier - combined with killer instrumentals, particularly the “Going Down Slow” solo it’s a fabulous end. But wait, it’s not the end…

The band return to the stage for Immigrant Song - pretty good, and then going right into an incredible Heartbreaker version, in my opinion one of the very best ever. It features a unique jam including “Mona” and “Pretty Thing” during the acapella solo. Yet another encore, Zep decided that they weren’t finished with Glasgow just yet!! After a mellotron solo, we get a brilliant Thank You to properly close the show. We’ll all I can say is wow, that show was something else, I think it is to this tour what Baltimore was to US 72 - underrated and definitely one for the history books!!!!

12/1/72 Newcastle - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 8/10

After the arguably slow start, Led Zeppelin we’re quickly able to shift into gear last night, with performances such as Dazed, Stairway, WLL, HB and TY being among the best I’ve recently heard (certainly superior to where they left off in Kyoto - not that it was a bad show). We’ll soon see if they can be equally good if not better. Sadly, the tape quality of this is one of the worst, muffled, hissy, distant and distorted. Rock and Roll is very close to being unlistenable at times, but the band are undoubtedly playing well. Over The Hills and Far Away is just incredible, one of the best solos I’ve heard on this song.

As we move on to Black Dog, the fantastic instrumentals continue, along with surprisingly solid vocals. I thought this version was very good to be honest!

Both Misty Mountain Hop and Since I’ve Been Loving You are incredibly strong this evening. The energy is incredible, though atmosphere is quite hard to truly feel in such a muffled and dull tape it still shines through here. Lots of emotion in the guitar playing throughout, listen to the transition between songs, and most importantly the unbelievably drumming - the glue that holds it all together!! Brilliant performance of Dancing Days afterwards as well.

Okay, so this show is undoubtedly amazing. Even the acoustic Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp seems extra spritely and fun. Unlike last night where up to this point they seemed to be warming up a bit, right now the band are focused and on-point, it’s incredible!

The Song Remains The Same is again immensely powerful and punchy tonight. The drums are so good, even with this disgusting sound quality they manage to come out on top. The Rain Song follows and it’s simply great.

This version of Dazed is something else. It’s insanely unique and fast, I think that’s a running theme here, the band are explosively launching into each new section, and developing the ethereal transition to the bow solo more and more each time! One of the best moments is when they start The Crunge - something I always love hearing. Instead of quiet segments where things are stripped bare to re-build up like last night, this time everyone is powering on and not coming up for air. The outro is quite notable for having a cool jam part that I liked - I think I prefer 11/30s Dazed overall, but I greatly appreciate the different approach here!

Stairway is rather killer. Fantastic performance from all 4 members, Page in particular is on absolute fire, delivering an incredible solo for the history books.

The show ends with this brilliant Whole Lotta Love. The theremin freakout is similar to last night, and therefore it’s great. A cool little thing is when Plant briefly sings the melody to D’yer Mak’er before they all return to the main theme following the “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” sing along. The medley is much more interesting than last night, including the rockabilly ditty “Need Your Love Tonight” followed by a slow “For What It’s Worth” and culminating with “Heartbreak Hotel”. Maybe the band were tight for time, but the lack of a heavy blues jam at the end like “Going Down Slow” takes off some marks overall.

In conclusion, this show is absolutely out of this world!!! From the beginning everyone was playing insanely well, a much stronger start than yesterday, but in the latter half I still think that 11/30 rules supreme! Eventually, I got used to the tape quality and what I thought would be an upsetting experience wishing for a better recording turned into a great listen!

11/30/72 Newcastle - Review By LZC

Overall Rating: 8.3/10

And we’re back on the road again, this time returning home to the UK after extensive touring around the world for the whole year of 1972. Newcastle was the same place the band began their last tour of Britain, let’s see if they can amaze us after the fantastic Japan 72 tour! First of all, this tape is quite bad. It’s certainly listenable and not at all distant (you can hear everyone) but is a bit distorted, grainy and has some tape speed issues at the end. But right now, everything seems good with Rock and Roll, despite it not being the best choice of opener considering the condition of Rob’s voice. He makes a decent job of it tbh.

Over The Hills and Far Away actually is a very good performance vocally, and the guitar certainly shines through during the solo. The rhythm section is not to be overlooked though, just like 10/2 that opened the previous tour, Bonham and Jones are busy laying down the foundations while Page and Plant warm up!

After a bizarre moment where Plant muddles up what album the last song was on, we have a normal version of Black Dog, it’s not bad, but nothing special yet. That comes next.

Well yeah, I guess you could say this Misty Mountain Hop performance is very good. Not the best ever, but well played of course! Page seems a bit too eager during the transition to Since I’ve Been Loving You, it’s played cleanly as anything but comes in and out at a slightly odd time, whatever this version is pretty good nonetheless. Nothing has really been insane yet, I’m waiting for Dazed and stuff for that.

Dancing Days is very tight here actually, a powerful and fun rendition of the song, I loved the crunchy guitar and drums locking into the groove for that epic Page/Bonzo feel! Fantastic job on everyone’s part. The band turn it down a notch again now, but does it work? Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp is good, but after that last song it killed the mood a touch, as if they were just about to explode. Anyway, just you wait for what’s next!

I love The Song Remains The Same tonight. From the unbelievable guitar soloing, to the little ad-libs from Plant “Show me, show me!”, this is excellent all the way through, as is the following performance of The Rain Song, this is some really TOP NOTCH STUFF!!!!!!!

This version of Dazed is an absolute beast!!! A monster, breathing fire all the way through - just listen to the intro to the amazing ramp up section, incredible guitar work here. There is a great transition to the bow solo that would’ve been quite unique at this point, the bass and drums are softly coming to an end with the droning of the violin bow on the strings in the background. This would eventually become the “San Francisco” section. The workouts are super fast paced, explosive and tight, and speaking of tight, the funk-filled crunge groove is immediately put into use before the main funk jam kicks off! A thing I like about this version are the moments where the volume is removed to create space on atmosphere, like the little silence before the return to the main theme. The outro is just fabulous.

There are a few unfortunate speed issues during this Stairway, but it is certainly listenable, and I’m not complaining! The solo here is to die for, and I’m still very impressed by how vocally fantastic these past songs have been. Yes there are a few cracks here and there but overall well done Percy!

I ADORE this performance of Whole Lotta Love!!! There’s more use of the atmosphere and space and silence from Dazed, shown at the start of the theremin freakout, a few final guitar chords sound out before the crazy pulsating theremin noises echo around, meanwhile, the drums are only softly pitter-pattering. Jones is playing his base quite high on the fretboard, then Page comes back to launch into a “Sing a Simple Song” style jam, following some random Plant ad-libs about… you guessed it… LOVE! The medley is fantastic, Boogie Chillen is very energetic and followed by an incredibly heavy version of Let’s Have a Party! No rare song surprises tonight, just finishing up right here with Going Down Slow, my god Page is out of his mind here!!! Unreal playing!!!!!!!

I thought that the Immigrant Song intro was just a tape speed issue, but it sounds like Page just really messed up the key of it. A good version but nothing special. Heartbreaker on the other hand is a completely brilliant rendition and a highlight for sure! Thank You closes the show, it’s really an amazing version, one of the best solos I’ve ever heard!!!! Absolutely stunning show from Dancing Days onwards, kinda slow start maybe but idk, it’s great anyway!

Highlights are: OTHAFA, MMH, DD, TSRTS, TRS, Dazed, Stairway, WLL, HB and TY
