tldr: talking about comparison in the cosplay community especially comparing cosplayers with smaller followings to larger followings, with features people like and dislike, etc, cosplayers “owning” looks and makeup styles, and my opinions on “copying” in the cosplay community
this is not meant to spread hate in any way! of anything this is meant to spread awareness and education to those who aren’t aware of the situation, or to give a voice to those who don’t have one!
hi! I’m a cosplayer and have been for a couple of years. as every cosplayer knows, your style will always change when cosplaying. as of a little while ago my makeup style was very different from what it is now - I had much bigger eye makeup to specify. personally I had a lot of inspiration behind the look - cartoon characters I cosplayed had large eyes, creators I liked enjoyed the style, and it was generally cute.
when I posted makeup with that eye look, I received an overwhelming amount of people specifying that I was copying a large creator by the name of onyx. If you look at one of my first videos on this account, I actually credit him and a few other cosplayers as inspiration for my look. inspiration. I wasn’t trying to steal anyone’s cosplay, views, or any of that. I was trying out a makeup style I enjoyed.
in my humble opinion as a cosplayer, you cannot “own” any part of your style. yes, you can absolutely have SIGNATURE PIECES, for example, cute hair clips on your wigs! but if another cosplayer wears clips on their wig, or are even inspired by you, they aren’t stealing anything from you. there’s a large difference between inspiration, sharing, copying, and impersonating.
I do NOT at all blame any large creators mentioned for the actions of the people here - I very much enjoy their content as well and had no desire to hurt them by taking makeup inspiration. I just hope that this can teach people about subjects like this!
building on this topic - I want to talk about comparison to other cosplayers on social media! this isn’t a super big problem on here (although it still happens) but I see it a lot on TikTok.
ex. I saw a cosplay of Vi from Arcane and checked the comments, seeing “you’re good but ____’s vi cosplay is better/my favourite” “this would be better if it looked more like ______” “vi is skinnier than that”
it’s insane that I still have to talk about this in the big ‘24 😭🙏 cosplay is NOT a competition (unless, of course, you’re in a cosplay competition. don’t come after me for this line). cosplay is meant to be a fun, expressive, and open hobby meant for anyone to partake in! it doesn’t matter their looks, features, expression, size, skin, ANYTHING. it’s a passive hobby.
yes, of course, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but putting someone else down with it is not okay. you’re allowed to have a favourite cosplayer, but comparing every other cosplayer to them doesn’t make that cosplayer better. it just puts other cosplayers down and turns your favourite into nothing but a standard for others.
cosplay is not about accuracy, it’s a hobby you partake in for fun. nothing I talk about here should have to be such a big deal but I see it all the time on social media and it drives me craaazy.
thank you to whoever makes it this far! this is just me spreading my opinion on the cosplay community that:
- cosplay is not inherently a competition
- you cannot “own” parts of your cosplay
- inspiration is very different from copying, stealing, and impersonating
etc, etc!
