Women account for only 35% of STEM graduates and face a higher risk of job displacement

The global digital gender gap may cost low- and middle-income countries $500 billion over the next five years

Women hold less than 40% of land ownership rights in many countries, and in 2023, only 35.5% of local government seats were held by women. Despite legislative efforts, many countries still lack gender-responsive policies

Here are some potential reasons for this disparity:

Stereotypes and biases: Persistent stereotypes about women's abilities in STEM can discourage girls from pursuing these fields.

Lack of role models: Seeing successful women in STEM careers can inspire young girls.

Educational challenges: Factors like unequal access to education, particularly in STEM subjects, can hinder women's progress.

Workplace barriers: Discrimination and harassment in STEM workplaces can create a hostile environment for women.

To address this issue, we need to:

Promote STEM education: Encourage girls and young women to explore STEM subjects from a young age.

Support mentorship programs: Connect women in STEM with younger students to provide guidance and inspiration.

Challenge stereotypes: Raise awareness about gender biases and promote positive representations of women in STEM.

Create inclusive workplaces: Foster a supportive and equitable environment for women in STEM careers.

The International Day of Democracy is observed annually on September 15.

It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote and uphold the principles of democracy globally.

The day provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world, encourage democratic participation, and address challenges facing democratic governance.

Each year, the UN and other organizations use this day to highlight the importance of democratic values, such as human rights, freedom of expression, the rule of law, and the role of civil society.

Themes for the day vary annually, focusing on issues such as democratic resilience, participation in decision-making, or strengthening institutions.

Xerogel is a type of solid material formed from a gel by drying it with unhindered shrinkage. It is a porous and lightweight substance that retains much of the internal structure of the gel from which it was derived.

Xerogels are typically created by removing the liquid component from a gel through evaporation, without causing the collapse of the gel's framework.

Xerogels have a variety of applications due to their high surface area and porosity, including:

- Catalysts or catalyst supports: Their porous nature makes them ideal for applications in catalysis.
- Absorbents: Xerogels can absorb moisture or other substances, making them useful in desiccants or spill containment.
- Aerogels: When further processed, xerogels can be converted into aerogels, which are even lighter and more porous.

Xerogels can be made from different materials, including silica, carbon, or metal oxides, depending on the desired properties for specific applications.
