Did you know that we still don't know the exact date that the first Thanksgiving took place? That is because all of our information about the feast comes from one letter written by a Pilgrim to his friends.
Despite that we can still figure out a lot about what led to the gathering and what it was like to attend it. From what they ate, to what they did for fun, to the fact that there was nearly twice as many Indians as Pilgrims: there is plenty to learn about this unique holiday and the real history behind it!

The Pilgrims were NOT religious refugees!

The common story of the Pilgrims is that they were fleeing religious persecution in England and escaped to America so they could practice their religion freely. This is simply not true.

In reality the Pilgrims were NOT being persecuted because before they left for America, they had ALREADY escaped England.

Their real motivations were much different than what the 2-dimensional folktale of them suggests. Instead, they traveled across the sea for many complicated reasons and if you would like to learn what motivated these unique settlers then consider watching the video linked below.

In 1623 a small fishing post was set up at Cape Ann in Massachusetts.

Though the settlement failed it began a chain of events the led to the creation of both Salem and Massachusetts!

Its unique circumstances led to Massachusetts having far more independence than other English colonies.

If you are interested in learning how 14 men began Massachusetts and change the history of America forever, then considering watching the video linked below!

Before the Pilgrims traveled to America, they purchased two ships but one sank before the journey began. One was called the Mayflower, what was the name of the other?
