Yo! I recently figured out how to get missing texture items in 1.12 and under! (i think)
So all you really need to do is type /give <playername> <blockname> 1 <id past max>
For example: /give Blackberrycak3 sand 1 3
the reason this happens is because the sand block id past 2 has no model or texture assigned to it so the missing texture is assigned to it
