The crisp mountain air nipped at my cheeks as I set off on my adventure into the Sierra National Forest, my destination the long-abandoned campground of Cat's Head. Big Creek, a shimmering ribbon of turquoise, tumbled over granite boulders nearby, its constant murmur a soothing soundtrack to my trek. I'd heard whispers of this lost place – a forgotten haven swallowed by the relentless embrace of nature. Some said remnants of the old campground could still be found, if you knew where to look. Others claimed it was completely gone, reclaimed entirely by the wild. I was determined to find out for myself.
The trail began easily enough, a well-worn path winding through towering pines and fragrant cedars. Sunlight dappled through the canopy, painting shifting patterns on the forest floor. Squirrels chattered from the branches overhead, their bushy tails twitching with curiosity. The air was thick with the scent of pine needles and damp earth, a welcome change from the city smog I was accustomed to. As I hiked deeper into the woods, the trail grew less distinct, becoming more of a suggestion than a clearly defined path. I consulted my map and compass frequently, navigating by landmarks and the position of the sun. The silence deepened, broken only by the rushing of the creek and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.
After several hours of hiking, I began to see subtle signs that I was nearing my goal. A rusted coffee can half-buried in the dirt. A flattened area amidst the trees, where perhaps a tent had once stood. A scattering of broken glass, now smoothed and frosted by time. These small clues fueled my excitement. I pushed on, my eyes scanning the undergrowth for more definitive evidence of the old campground.
Then, I saw it. Half-hidden by a tangle of wild blackberry bushes, a stone fire ring, its blackened rocks a testament to countless campfires past. Nearby, a crumbling concrete slab, likely the foundation of a long-gone cabin or restroom. A wave of melancholy washed over me as I imagined the families who had once gathered here, their laughter echoing through the trees, their stories told around the crackling fire. What had become of them? Why had this place been abandoned?
I spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the area, carefully documenting my findings. I discovered the remnants of a picnic table, its wooden planks long rotted away, leaving only the metal frame. I found a rusted horseshoe, a poignant reminder of the pack animals that had once carried supplies into this remote camp. Each artifact I unearthed felt like a small piece of the campground's history, a connection to the people who had once called this place home.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows through the trees, I knew it was time to head back. I took one last look at the abandoned campground, a sense of respect and reverence filling my heart. Cat's Head may be gone, but its spirit lingered in the whispering pines and the rushing waters of Big Creek. The adventure had been more than just a hike; it had been a journey into the past, a glimpse into a forgotten world. And as I walked back through the twilight forest, I knew that the memories of Cat's Head, like the echoes of laughter and campfire stories, would stay with me long after I left the Sierra National Forest.

Duysen announced in April that one of the two mills operated by Sierra Forest Products would close if the Giant Sequoia Monument designation was signed by President Bill Clinton. The monument, which set aside 355,000 acres of national forest, included several current logging operations and closed commercial logging opportunities in the rest of the monument areas.
