TOM CRUISE IS MY BIRTHDAY TWIN. And the much-awaited MI-8 or ‘MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: The Final Reckoning’ makes me so proud to say it out aloud. Because it is a 3-hour long journey into an AI future that’s almost within touching distance. Its seatbelt-not-optional action may feel a tad stretched at times but the prescience of a nuclear stand-off between an all-knowing super AI system and the rest of the world is chilling… nuclear winter-chilling! There are also visual bits that scream out of the screen making you wonder: how could the writers have foreseen this. I am talking about nuclear warheads with Indian and Pakistani flags popping up on the screen every now and then. If there was an award category for a film that captured the zeitgeist (of a year) so precisely then it would be for this one. It is a film to be watched only in the theatres, especially to get the full impact of the kind of future that could await us if guardrails aren’t put on this convergence of AI and military defence
