As a pioneer of vertical skateboarding, Tony Alva is considered the "Godfather of Modern Skateboarding", and is also one of the original members of the Zephyr Competition Skateboarding Team (Z-Boys). Alva is also credited as the innovator of the frontside air. He is a three-time World Champion and was voted "Skateboarder of the Year" in Skateboarder Mag's 1976 readers poll, and the first person inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. Films made about Alva's life include the award-winning documentaries Dogtown and Z-Boys and The Tony Alva Story, as well as the feature film, The Lords of Dogtown, starring Heath Ledger. Tony Alva is the oldest living professional skateboard in the world and has been sponsored by Vans since 1974.
