King Sekoti – Hope!

We hadn’t planned to make this post yet; we wanted to wait a little longer. However, we’ve been forced to do so due to the large amount of misinformation circulating online, falsely claiming that Sekoti has died. Most of these posts come from pages that simply repost content from other sources without verifying the information, solely to gain followers.

We want to clarify that, according to a recent report from a safari company, Sekoti was seen on January 3rd, feeding and in better condition. Just a few meters away, a group of young lions was playing at Leopard Rock. During that week, Sekoti was sighted multiple times.

It’s important to note that lion sightings in January have been scarce overall, not just in Sekoti’s case. This could be due to a lower presence of tourists in Savuti this month compared to other times of the year—something completely normal, which happens at least once a year.

Why hasn’t Sekoti been seen frequently?

We understand the concern, given that Sekoti has been ill. However, it’s crucial to remember that guides in Savuti do not patrol the area daily. Unlike private reserves like Sabi Sand, where lions are constantly monitored, in Savuti, guides usually stay for only a day or two before returning months later. This explains the lack of continuous reports about his whereabouts.

Sekoti has distanced himself from his brothers and now roams the territorial boundaries. In that area, sightings are less frequent since tourists visiting that region are usually more interested in the ancient rock paintings left by ancestors and the leopards that are sometimes seen on the rocks.

We ask you not to jump to conclusions or spread unverified information. If Sekoti is not seen for two months, then there would be reasons to worry. For now, he is still fighting, and as long as there is hope, King Sekoti has not yet fallen.

Ngoma (the old) has been on a romantic mating date with the lioness Broken Tail!

Broken Tail is the last lioness remaining from her natal pride. A few years ago, she and her five companions crossed the Chobe River in search of prey. Tragically, five of the lionesses were immediately shot by Namibian farmers, who, minutes later, began cutting off the lionesses' paws in front of tourists.

As a result, all the cubs left behind by the lionesses, who depended on them, died the following month.

The subadult lions managed to survive by joining other lionesses, although some later disappeared. Broken Tail was left alone with her cubs, who are believed to be the offspring of Caller and Tom Tom. These two males arrived in the area and fought one of the Scar Face lions, leaving him with a broken leg.

Today, the Broken Tail Pride has grown in numbers, a clear sign that this lioness and her dominant males have done well. However, since the arrival of Caller, Tom Tom, and the Ngoma Boys, the prides along the Chobe River have divided into smaller groups.

The greatest threat here is humans. When the Chobe River dries up, lions must cross north to find prey, but the entire path is covered with farmers and their livestock, who graze the area illegally and without permits.

The Chobe River lions cannot go south either. There is nothing there—no water, scarce prey, and small lion groups. Tourism is almost nonexistent in the south, aside from the presence of villages.

In recent years, I’ve observed that Caller and Tom Tom fathered many male cubs, who are now nomads, but they have disappeared. Were they victims of humans? Or did they move south, which is why we don’t see them anymore? I don’t know.

Lions are a major attraction for tourists and their absence will drastically, negatively affect tourism along the Chobe River.

All the tourism enterprises on both the Namibian and the Botswana sides would like to see better protection for wildlife and cooperation between Namibia and Botswana. Tourism could have long-term benefits for the area. Not only does it create jobs, but it trains people who can form their own tourism-related businesses. Rural communities need to see the potential in tourism without necessarily giving up their farming practices.

Collared Male Lion Killed by Villagers in Botswana!

Bad news for wildlife enthusiasts: a collared male lion has been killed in Botswana. While details of the incident remain scarce, a video circulating online shows the lion recorded moments after its death, seemingly caused by gunshots.

In the footage, a vehicle is visible in the background, suggesting that those responsible had been following the lion. The reasons for this pursuit are unclear, but the possibilities narrow down to two: the lion may have previously attacked livestock belonging to villagers, or the individuals involved were hunters.

The video also shows several dogs of various sizes, some of which appear dead with bite marks likely inflicted by the lion. However, the location of the incident seems far from any village, as only trees and grasslands are visible in the footage. This suggests that these individuals were actively searching for the lion with the intent to kill it.

Efforts are currently underway to identify the lion, but the task is challenging due to the lack of information about the exact area where the incident occurred. If the lion was recently collared, those responsible for monitoring it should have data that could aid in identification.

In a related event, a report earlier this month detailed two individuals attempting to hunt a lion at night. The lion attacked, injuring one of them, who later died. While some argue that these individuals were merely searching for their cattle at night, the incident reflects the inherent risks of human-wildlife coexistence in conflict zones.

This tragic event highlights the growing tension between wildlife conservation and local communities, a topic that continues to spark debate in Botswana and other regions where apex predators share territory with humans.

Tsakeda (daughter of Tsekedi) and Sekoti on a romantic date!

In July 2022, Satau’s daughter mated with Sekoti. It was a success, and months later, the lioness gave birth to cubs. Did the cubs survive? We’ll try to confirm this in an upcoming post.

After the arrival of the Renegades and Sekoti in the north in October 2021, following Pretty Boy’s departure, the four males began mating with the northern lionesses, leaving behind many cubs. However, as far as we know, many of these cubs did not survive. It even seems that some lionesses have disappeared—did they separate, or did they die of natural causes? It’s a mystery. Since their arrival, none of the northern cubs have survived beyond their first few months, at least according to sightings. Everything indicates that the only cubs to have survived so far were born in late 2022, early 2023, and later.

The old northern lioness and leader, the famous Satau, also disappeared in 2022, a few months after giving birth to a cub who appeared to be Sekoti’s offspring. What happened to the cub is unknown, but it likely didn’t survive.

Satau’s mother, or perhaps her older sister, also disappeared when the Renegades and Sekoti arrived in the north. The lioness was already very old and seemed to be partially blind.

When it comes to appearance, Romeo is the first on the list. By far, he is the one who resembles Sekekama the most among all his brothers and half-brothers.

The Guardian of the Family!

Sekekama has been portrayed as a lion with a fierce temper—brutal and ruthless—a reputation solidified by National Geographic's documentary Savage Kingdom. However, behind this image of violence and authority lies another side to him: a steadfast protector, willing to go to any lengths to defend what he considered his own.

It’s been a month since the last photographic sighting of Sekoti!

A month has passed since the last photograph we saw of Sekoti. Since then, some people have claimed to have seen him, but no photos accompanied their reports. Could Sekoti have been seen? Yes, Savuti often hosts many tourists from various safari companies and different guides, some of whom are not connected to us.

We just have to wait; time will tell where Sekoti is.

Romeo is a very handsome lion. Despite being aggressive, he has taken good care of himself and has almost no scars on his face.
