Here is my new single “This Is Not Forever”.
I wrote the song about six months ago, before all… this... happened. It’s about watching someone very close to you starting fall into a depression, and wanting to let them know that you’re there for them, in a very serious way.
Listening to it in these changed times, I feel it even more deeply than I did before. It seems like the right time to put it out.
The video, directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren, sees dancers trade the stage for their living rooms and backyards, both in isolation and connected motion. Each of the dancers were shot at home on their phone, under movement direction by choreographer Lucas Jervies.
I think it says something beautiful and profound about the ways we are finding each other, and staying connected, during an extraordinary period in our lives.

I recently put out a new song called ‘Ernie’ about my son. You may have seen me perform some of it on Australian Story, who made a beautiful little video for it (below).
Having a kid for the first time is an incredible rush of emotions. There’s elation, despair, gratitude, guilt, sorrow, hilarity and love. Ernie’s father and I wrote the song about that onslaught of often contradictory feelings. One minute you are on the verge of collapse, and the next you will be weeping tears of joy. It’s a very concentrated experience and it’s completely relentless. In the middle of it all is the child, this living, breathing miracle. You keep pinching yourself.
All the things they tell you about having a kid are true, but nothing can ever prepare you for it (which of course, they tell you too).

Last week Keir and I had the unexpected pleasure of being nominated for a Helpmann Award for our work writing songs for Melbourne Theatre Company's "Twelfth Night". Yay! Some incredibly stiff competition but. Can't wait to share this honour with our talented lyricist William Shakespeare, assuming he bothers to turn up.

Kate Miller-Heidke is an award-winning singer-songwriter who traverses the worlds of contemporary pop, folk, musical theatre and opera. She represented Australia at Eurovision in 2019 with her original song ‘Zero Gravity’, and is currently appearing as a Coach on Channel 7's The Voice.
Kate has released five top-10 studio albums including O Vertigo!, Nightflight, and Curiouser – which featured the multi-platinum hits ‘The Last Day On Earth’ and ‘Caught In The Crowd’ – and her latest album, Child In Reverse, which included 'You Can't Hurt Me Anymore' ft. Jaguar Jonze.
Trained as a classical singer at the Queensland Conservatorium, Kate has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and several roles for the English National Opera. She composed the Helpmann Award-winning opera 'The Rabbits', plus the music & lyrics (with Keir Nuttall) for 'Muriel's Wedding: The Musical', and the new musical comedy 'Bananaland'.
