Leading and Nurturing – A Reflection on Leadership and Motherhood
These images beautifully capture a scene that resonates deeply with me: the delicate balance of leading while nurturing.
In the photos, a mother duck calmly guides her ducklings across the field. She walks ahead, yet she keeps a watchful eye, ensuring every little one follows and no one gets left behind. Her ducklings may wander slightly, curious and exploring, but they always return to her steady path, trusting her to lead them safely forward.
This, to me, is leadership at its core: walking ahead with intention, leading by example, and creating an environment of trust and security.
As a mother and a business leader, I’ve come to realize how intertwined these roles are.
In motherhood, you lead with compassion and patience, nurturing growth while instilling independence. You learn to slow down when needed and celebrate progress, no matter how small.
In leadership, the same principles hold true. It’s about empowering your team to explore, learn, and grow, knowing you’re there to guide them back when challenges arise.
But leadership isn’t always walking at the front. It’s also about listening, observing, and knowing when to step back. It’s about trusting your team, giving them space to discover their potential while ensuring they feel supported.
Sometimes, it means letting others shine while you stand quietly in the background. Other times, it’s about showing resilience and calm when uncertainty sets in – because, like the mother duck, those around you look to you for assurance.
To me, both motherhood and leadership are about showing up consistently – even on the days when it feels tough. It’s about leading with love, courage, and intention while creating a path that others can follow.
To all leaders and moms: remember that every step you take impacts those following you. Walk intentionally. Lead with care.
