There are a lot of personalities in the real estate industry and certainly a lot of opinions as well. The lion's share of these voices are all similar in that the definition of success is MORE...... more sales, more sales, and yes more sales.
In the real estate industry, there seems to be one message that gets repeated by industry leaders, coaches, and influencers: If you want to be successful, you have to sell more. Every year, you’re expected to outdo your previous numbers, beat your teammates, and somehow surpass the top agent in your market. The idea is that selling more is the only true measure of success.
But is that really the case?
While high sales volume can be impressive, it’s not the only path to a thriving real estate business. In fact, some of the most successful agents aren’t the ones closing the most deals—they’re the ones making the most money while keeping their business lean and efficient.
The Myth of "More Sales = More Success"
It’s easy to get caught up in the race to sell more homes each year. Many agents are told that in order to be successful, they must constantly increase their transaction count. But what’s often ignored in this narrative is the cost that comes with it. More transactions typically mean:
More overhead – Increased marketing budgets, higher brokerage fees, and more team members to manage.
More stress – Juggling multiple clients at once can lead to burnout, long hours, and reduced work-life balance.
More dependency on paid leads – If you’re constantly paying for online leads, your cost per sale can skyrocket, eating into your profits.
At the end of the day, success isn’t just about selling more—it’s about keeping more of what you earn.
The Smarter Approach: Profitability Over Volume
What if, instead of focusing on selling more, you focused on making more money per transaction? A few key strategies can help you do just that:
1. Reduce Overhead and Increase Margins
Instead of chasing higher sales volume, look at your business expenses. Are you spending too much on lead generation, office space, or unnecessary marketing? Cutting costs in these areas can dramatically increase your profitability—without having to close more deals.
2. Build a Referral-Based Business
One of the biggest expenses for many agents is acquiring new leads. Instead of pouring money into online ads and paid lead generation services, why not focus on creating a strong referral network? Clients who come from referrals already trust you, making them easier to convert and often more profitable than cold leads.
3. Focus on Higher-Value Transactions
Not all sales are created equal. Selling 50 homes at $250,000 might sound great, but if you can sell 20 homes at $1M+ with the same effort, you’ll likely make more money while working fewer hours. Specializing in higher-end properties or niche markets can be a more effective way to increase your income.
4. Leverage Systems and Automation
Successful realtors know how to maximize efficiency. Using technology to streamline processes, automate follow-ups, and manage transactions can free up time and reduce the need for a massive team—saving money and increasing profitability.
Defining Success on Your Own Terms
Real success in real estate isn’t about selling the most—it’s about building a sustainable, profitable business that aligns with your goals. If you’re closing fewer deals but making more money (and spending less to do it), aren’t you winning?
Instead of measuring success by transaction count, consider a different metric: profit per deal and overall quality of life. Because at the end of the day, the agent with the most sales isn’t always the most successful—the agent with the best business is. Continue to find what works for you and don't listen to the outside voices who are trying to have you follow what is best for them.
