I’m spending Christmas on land with family in Tokyo and want to wish you all a joyous holiday season and fair winds in 2025!
Thank you for being part of this journey as I’ve shifted from my original goal of crossing the Pacific before turning 70 to embracing the adventure of exploring remote Japan by sailboat. 70 ports so far!

Good morning. The ‘wonder’ of the pre-dawn sky never ceases to evoke ‘wonder’ and remind us that it’s always darkest before the dawn!

Love this. Ella Wheeler Wilcox is the same generation as my grandparents. They knew real hardship and headwinds. Yet they steered a course relentlessly fighting the odds to have a future for their families. Their struggles make her words all the more meaningful to me. #sailing #lifehacks #poetry #ellawheelerwilcox

Good morning.
Dawn's light is a special gift. Each sunrise reveals new possibilities and brings clarity to our current challenges. In contrast, the bold and stark light of midday lacks nuance and beauty, yet it’s essential to guide us through the day.

A year ago, a strange and dangerous typhoon swept over Okinawa, returning to sink three vessels where I am currently moored. At that time, I was a day and a half sail further north in Uken Inlet on Amami Oshima, preparing a mooring buoy in Buren Bay to keep Wahine safe and hoping for the best
In the end, Typhoon Kahnun lingered over Amami for a week, with the eye passing over Wahine, my Gib'Sea, three times. I am incredibly grateful that she was securely moored in the middle of Buren Bay, thanks to the help of my good mate Mitsu.
Here's the episode that tells more.

Hi, I`m Lowell, a 69-year-old rookie sailor and a never-too-later! I had an aspiration to sail across an ocean solo before I die. I am a Canadian living in Japan, and in 2019, I purchased Wahine, a 1988 Gib Sea 402. I moved on board while she was moored in Tokyo. In March 2021, I terminated my contract with the Marina and have been living and slowly making my way around Japan, gaining valuable experience while working remotely from the boat. Wahine is my home, my studio, and my life laboratory. Because of various reasons explained in multiple videos, I have had to abandon my goal of crossing the Pacific before I am 70. Instead, I will complete a loop around Japan to celebrate turning 70 next year. But first, some boat projects.
Join me on my voyage around Japan.
