Knowledge vs. Experience: collecting the dots vs. connecting them.
Credit: animated by Visualize Value
In terms of definitions:
- Knowledge can be thought of as collecting information to build up a theoretical understanding of a topic.
- Experience stresses practice, or the application of knowledge over a prolonged period of time, in order to reinforce understanding of subject matter or a certain task.
- Prowess or mastery comes from combining knowledge, experience and skills.
There's of course more nuance here than the visual captures:
- Experience can reshape or refine our knowledge into deeper understanding. It can highlight gaps in our knowledge that require further collection then connection of dots.
- Experience and expertise are different things. Just because you have experienced a problem doesn't mean you've mastered the solution. This can however come over time as the collection and connection of dots form a clearer picture of the problem space.

From time to time I post videos on here. Some of the tutorials stay online, others go private when I feel they're outdated. I hope some of this stuff is entertaining or useful.
