Kirtans were originally composed in the Sanskrit language, an ancient Indian language. The Sanskrit alphabet has a strong energetic and vibrational component—it is said that the words, when chanted, create a powerful vibration in the body, affecting a person's mind and spirit. Chanting in kirtan has such a powerful and uniting effect, focusing everyone on the real goal of life, namely to reconnect with Krishna. In kirtan we are all equal – spirit souls chanting the holy name, no matter whether we are a new bhakta or a senior-most leader. We aim to serve those who have come to hear the glories of the Supreme Lord Krishna.
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), colloquially known as the Hare Krishna Movement, is a Gaudiya Vaishnava Hindu religious organization that promotes Harinam worldwide. We all belong to this organization.
