**P JAYACHANDRAN TRIBUTE**
**THE LEGEND SHIFTS THE ABODE TO HEAVEN**
No, I am not singing this time. Let me take this moment to write something that has been in my mind for years about PJ Sir, our beloved Jayettan.
People who know me very well, definitely would know that I donโt have any personal favorite singer, be it Classical or Non-Classical music. That being said, our country is blessed with a plethora of super singers and each of them is great in his/her own way.
So what makes Jayettan great? Here is what I think.
1. His ability to understand the emotions of a song and apply that to his rendition. How does he do that? with voice modulation, stress on different syllables, apart from being pitch perfect and taala perfect.
2. Jayettan cannot be imitated by anyone. Singing exactly like another singer is impossible but I have found people who can sing like SPB, KJY, Hariharan etc, atleast at a surface level. Those artists atleast have a similar voice that of SPB/KJY and are able to imitate the singing style. But in Jayettanโs case, imitation is one of the most difficult tasks, because - the way he stresses each syllable in a song, the way modulates his voice, the way he applies soft sangathees - are not according to โpredefinedโ patterns. There may be people who have similar voice compared to Jayettan but the singing style cannot be copied.
Note - I always say that we should not copy anyoneโs singing style because we need to develop our own styles and individuality. This topic is out of scope for this post.
3. Like SPB, Jayettan was not classically trained, but one does not need to be trained to sing film songs. And just like SPB, Jayettan sang exactly the way he was taught by the music directors without any deviations but with more beauty. Let me take an example out of the 1000โs out there.. The song โThottene Njan Manassu konduโ is one of the most difficult ever malayalam film songs created and I have heard that Devarajan Master embraced Jayettan after he sang the song. The emotions Jayettan has given in that song (there is a superb virutham too in the beginning) is simply out of the world.
4.I have interacted with him years ago and it was quite easy to find out that he spoke his mind without any inhibitions. Many musicians who I know try to be โniceโ and โpoliticalโ but Jayettan was never like that. He perfectly knows his weaknesses and was not afraid to admit it in front of any one.
5. He survived in the โMahameru Yesudasโ era. Nothing more to say on this point. Self explanatory.
6. Most singers lose their voice post their 50โs but his singing quality, sweetness of voice etc flourished after the 1980โs. His voice even in the late 2010โs was very sweet and impeccable. In my books, voice is not the benchmark to judge singers but it's still worth mentioning it here because voice acts as the โattireโ in which the vocal is presented.
7. The way he sang Dasettan's songs. He considered blessed to live in the Dasettan era and sing Dasettan's songs whenever he could. He often sang in his interviews or casual conversations. I personally loved the impromptu renditions of songs like โThamasamenthe varuvanโ and others because he was able to sing them with such perfection and feel.
8. Stage singing - Many singers struggle to sing on pitch on stage. In malayalam industry, Jayettan had this special ability to sing songs with near-pitch perfection on stage. He was an excellent stage singer.
9. His tamizh songs - Malayalees have this ability to sing other language songs. But in Jayettanโs case, his tamizh songs were extra - ordinary. His diction, pronounciation in tamizh is superb. One of my personal favorites is โOru Daivam thantha pooveโ though sometimes I debate if he sang the โEn Mel Vizhunthaโ better than that.
10. When he sings a song again, he rarely changes the structure of the song though there might be some slight improvisations here and there (may be unintentional as well). I actually like this quality of his because film songs are not to be changed drastically from the original structure. One can improvise but only to a certain extent such that structure of the song is retained. When he sings a song again on live stage, I get a refreshing feel because a) the song is now sang on stage/ impromptu so the atmosphere is different b) the original song is not mutilated so I still feel that I heard the original song.
These are my own personal opinions and those who read this post might disagree with me on some of these points.

โI used to struggle to hit high notes and was straining a lot in the upper regions of songs. However after listening to Deepakโs video, I see improvement while singing high notes, and some of the songs that i used to really struggle before, have become definitely easier. โ
Received this in the morning - Made my day. Happy to see that my youtube videos are benefitting others.
