Hello everyone! irikachana here, on behalf of the Church of Kondo team. It’s finally time to get things rolling once more, as we’re currently looking into doing some more tracks from Paper Mario 64, but… We need your help!!!

As we move forward with these restorations, we want to know what you would like to hear most out of em’ with the instrumentation. Here’s the options we’re running with:

1. Sampling from highest quality sources.
Specifically, the 80s disk libraries & other sources that feature much higher fidelity, multisample depth, (and even stereo at points) than what was available on SC-88Pro. This is not what was used by the original team, and sometimes sounds very different to the original game, but is the highest quality versions of the sounds.

2. Sampling the full patches as played back from SC-88Pro.
This would be more similar to what you have heard on N64 (par some sounds), and is closer to what the composers likely heard played off the synthesizer. It would feature a crisper sound and noticeable instrument multisample depth not heard in the game.

3. Sampling specifically how it was done in PM64.
This is the closest and most faithful to how the game sounds with minimal difference, featuring only better sample clarity.
But otherwise would be selectively sampled and looped all the same as heard on N64.

Let us know what you think with the poll, or drop your thoughts in the comment section if you’d like!!!

(thanks to goatsoup.mp3 for helping me make this a bit more concise & easy to read ^^)

Greetings everyone, this is ‪@TheBricksterr‬ speaking. I am here today to say that I am no longer the project leader for the Church of Kondo. If you'd like to read about why I am making this decision, you can find more information here: pastebin.com/xiWMvBmU

For those who simply want to know who will lead now, I am proud to say that ‪@irikachana‬ will be the new lead on the channel, and for ‪@ChurchSermonsCoK‬ ! They are more than qualified to be running such a big project, and have the production know how and chops that I never had myself. I know the channel and the team will be in good hands, under them, and I hope their leadership can help spark some life back into the project.

To all who have stuck around, thank you. It has been a fun ride, and I'm glad to have not only shared the works of my team with you all, but to in general have given public awareness to folk on the knowledge and subject of the original sample sources to these games. I've always wanted to see people use the sources over those soundfont rips of games that I so often see, and I hope that the research inspired some folk, at some point.

Just recently, ‪@ToffeeBun‬ made a fantastic video on the subject of sampling in video games, which ties into the research work we do, and what we make here on the channel. It is a well researched video that makes the subject easy to digest, and I cannot recommend it enough. Please do give it a watch!

Hey everyone, courtesy of ‪@SennX‬ , there is now a new restoration out for Plok's Beach theme! He spent 10 long months on making this track happen, and I think the end result sound fantastic! If you're a fan of the game or just great music in general, please do check out Senn's new Restore of the Beach theme. I promise you will not be disappointed!

The uploads for the new versions of the Opening and Title theme for Sonic Advance have been unlisted, for now. We're currently trying to work on getting the organ volumes fine tuned, since it slipped past the crew that was up late at night. To make up for this, the new version of the opening theme will contain the Chaos Emerald sound and Wind sound at the start, in high quality! The new versions will be up when they're ready.

Just a reminder that we have a second channel in the form of Church Sermons!

Just recently, Nuclear and some pals made this amazing remix of Angel Island Zone Act 1 that deserves all the views in the world, in my book. Trust me, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Remember how we were trying to a long time to find the intended synth for the Sonic & Knuckles Collection, and bounced back and forth on the SC-88 and SC-88Pro?

Originally, due to the remix of Flying Battery from the Sonic Olympics game, I used that as proof that the 88Pro was used, since it contained the Square Lead the SC-88 had. Though I failed to realize that using this as my sole evidence alone was a bad idea. While it is true that USP, the company who did the arrangements for the Collection, would later use the SC-88, albums released before and after the final compilation of the MIDIOUT (archive containing the MIDI data), October 1996, still used the SC-88, with the SC-88Pro not being used in their albums, until sometime later.

Furthermore, the SC-88Pro was simply too new for it to have been reasonably used within the development of the GM arrangements of the collection. The earliest known firmware for the SC-88Pro is from September 1996. Considering the final version of the music was compiled for the collection in October 1996, it would be unreasonable to assume USP used the SC-88Pro, since the earliest the SC-88Pro would have shipped, was October 1996. This, alongside the fact that they didn't use the SC-88Pro wasn't used in USP's albums, until sometime later, is proof enough that the SC-88Pro was not used in the game.

In the end, the SC-88 is more than likely what they used for creating the GM arrangements for the game. Considering a few songs use the Standard 2 Drum Kit the SC-88 introduced, the fact that USP had already been using the SC-88 for their albums, and the fact that the SC-88 had already been out for a while by the time October 1996 rolled around, It's very likely that is the synth the arrangements were designed for. Though it's worth noting that it's possible the different arrangers might have instead used the SC-55 for the songs they arranged, since USP also had SC-55 synths on hand. But since specific credits as to who did which arrangements are unavailable, and because staff involved don't remember much on the production of the arrangements, we cannot say for sure if this is the case.

I would like to extend my most sincerest apologies for not bringing this info forth, sooner. I was afraid to do so, fearing that correcting the record so soon would upset folk that I "lied" to them, in a sense. Furthermore, recording the 88Pro recordings took a ton of re-recording to fix tracks with issues, alongside manual amplifying, denoising, trimming, and tagging, for all tracks, and I would have hated to make Chimeratio and Cryptovolans upset by revealing the information too soon, since I didn't want to risk having them feel that I possibly wasted their time by recording so many songs, under the false impression that they were recording on the for-sure definitive synth. I still feel their recordings are excellent, and I would give them a listen, I just hope they, and you, the audience, can forgive me for leading you all astray in a confusing matter.

I would like to extend a thousand thanks to ‪@MasteredRealm‬ for pouring so much time into researching this effort, and for telling me all of this info. He and Sonic Retro user, chibi Steven, are who I have to thank in helping bring this information to light. I would also like to thank all who have helped with this journey up until now, including ‪@Corruptovolans‬ , ‪@chimeratio‬ , ‪@dandalyn‬ , ‪@ValleyBellSound‬ , ctr001, and everyone who stuck around for this wild roller-coaster.

Thank you for reading, and again, I am sincerely sorry for all of the confusion and perhaps anger that stemmed from this rabbit hole of a game. I hope you all can forgive me, but I understand if you choose not to.

After a long time of trying to find the correct synth, the correct synth for the Sonic & Knuckles Collection's GM soundtrack has been found, and uploaded!

With recordings being provided by ‪@Corruptovolans‬ and ‪@chimeratio‬ , with MIDI files provided by Valley Bell, and research and tagging provided by ‪@MasteredRealm‬ , the complete soundtrack is here, all on real Roland Sound Canvas SC-88Pro hardware! The results of our labor can be found with the video linked below. Major thanks goes to everyone who was involved with the project for being patient, and helping make this release a reality, as I have long since wanted the definitive listening experience for the soundtrack to be out there, to show that these arrangements ain't nearly as bad as some folk think.

A new upload of the FM soundtrack for the Sonic & Knuckles Collection is up! For the reupload, tagging has been revamped, and some songs have been "fixed", using MIDI files provided by ValleyBell! These "fixed" MIDI files fix errors that occured when the songs were converted to the format the PC game used, which affected things like overlapping notes. Errors such as sequencing errors have not been fixed, and have been kept in line with what was originally done by the team at USP, who did the music for this version of the game.

Please redownload the songs if you used the old download, so you have the up to date tags, and fixed songs in place. MIDI files from ValleyBell (including his "fixed" files) have also be included for download!

New SC-88Pro recordings of the Sonic & Knuckles Collection soundtrack will be coming, in the following days! It turns out, after a realization on my end, I found that the Collection instead used the SC-88Pro, and not the SC-88, going by the Square Wave sound. More details about that can be read here: twitter.com/lebrickster/status/1547239550740840448

When complete, a whole video will be posted with all of the 88Pro recordings, and a lossless download link. I hope you all look forward to that!
