Do's and don't's when writing an academic essay:
I - don't :
1 Use conversational open phrases (let's move on, yes , well, you see ...-SPOKEN LANGUAGE-)
2 opinion words or verbs : I THINK, I ASSUME, I BELIEVE, FROM MY PERSPECTIVE...(UNLESS ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY).
3 avoid personal pronouns: I, You, We. (Unless Required!!)
4 Common vocabulary: very, a lot, all people...
5 Use shortened verbs: isn't, shouldn't, won't...
6 Use slang, jargon or informal language.
7 too general at a development of an idea
8 write your ideas as bullet points or lists.
9 pose direct/ indirect questions as a thesis Statement
10 make spelling or grammar mistakes.
11 mix verb tenses within one essay.
II - Do:
1 Leave out phrases or expressions that belong to the spoken English. Use connectors instead. ( In short, to conclude, moreover, ...)
2 BE OBJECTIVE
3 avoid subjectivity, use "IT" instead.
4 Use formal and unique vocabulary : have found, attractive, other issues (instead of other things)
5 Write the full verb: is not, should not, will not...
6 Use a formal and academic language
7 be specific, concise, straight forward.
8 form your ideas into well structured sentences then into coherent paragraphs.
9 convert the question into a statement instead.
10 check the essay after writing from grammar or spelling mistakes.
11 use one or two correct tenses according to the type required.

In 2009, I landed my first job in a city far from home. The company provided a bus for transportation to and from work, which I eagerly boarded every day. However, one fateful December morning, I woke up feeling ill and decided to stay home. Little did I know, the rain that was pouring down outside would lead to a catastrophic flood that would trap and strand the very bus I would have been on. Tragically, all of my coworkers who were on that bus died in the rising floodwaters. It was a devastating blow, not just because I had lost my colleagues, but because I could have been on that bus, too. The memory of that day still haunts me to this day.
