The mazurka is a Polish musical form based on stylised folk dances in triple meter, usually at a lively tempo. "Mazurka" is a Polish word, it means a Masovian woman or girl.

Chopin began composing mazurkas in 1824, evolving his work in 1830. Chopin used classical techniques in his mazurkas, including counterpoint and fugue, to make them more interesting.

He also made pieces so that they would not be used for dancing, distancing himself from the traditional Polish form, without leaving behind the basic characterizing elements, such as repetition.
