Hi everyone,

Itā€™s been a while, and I sincerely appreciate the growth Iā€™ve achieved this year. As humans, we often dream bigger than what we accomplish, but when I take a moment to compare my journey with others, I find myself saying, ā€œAlhamdulilah,ā€ which translates to ā€œAll thanks belong to Allah.ā€

Casa De Novia

My Expectations Before Watching

I never looked forward to this film; I just saw it's a new film on Prime Video and thought, "Let's go watch it." I never saw the film's trailer or had insight into the cast, but I knew it had something to do with Niyi Akinmolayan's studio, Anthills. After watching, I realized Uyoyou Adia's direction is brilliant compared to the last film she directed, titled L.I.F.E.

The Acting

I love Anee Icha's acting. I'm seeing her for the first time in this film, and she delivered a brilliant performance, as did the lead actor, Taye Arimore, especially in his role as Esosa. I appreciate that it's not the regular faces taking the lead. The supporting cast all delivered good performances.

The Good

This film is the go-to if you want to laugh really hard. The lead character, Anee Icha, seems to be a flawless actress who excels in comedy. It's quite impressive because initially, I didn't anticipate it as a comedy until I started watching. The art design and costumes are good. The building serves as the perfect backdrop for such a narrative.

The Bad

There was this lizard scene that seemed very unnecessary. I feel like the story is brilliant, but its resolution is underwhelming.

My Verdict

If I were to rate this film out of 10, I'd give it a 6.5.

Different Strokes is currently streaming on Prime Video.

My Expectations Before Watching

Who doesn't like a lineup of films that feature Lilian Esoro, Mosun Filani, Blessing Jessica, Mercy Johnson, Jim Iyke, Lateef Adedimeji, Etim Effiong, and Deyemi Okanlawon? Seeing some of my favorite Nollywood faces, I just knew this is one film I want to watch.

The Plot/Storytelling

The film has a good plot, and it developed quite well. The momentum of using therapy-like sessions for each of the ladies makes their individual subplots stand out and not be swallowed by those of the two main actresses.

The Acting

The film seems to tick a lot of boxes for me when it comes to acting, from the emotions purged by the actors in this film to how convincing their performances were.

Themes

Starting off this film and seeing the projection of men in this film, I felt angry. I asked, "Why are they all married to condescending men?" I wondered if this is just another film that preaches female solidarity while bringing the other gender down. Anyways, the film explored a very important number of themes, including gender-based violence, marriage, marital infidelity, and female solidarity, to mention but a few.

Though I love the fact that they struck a balance by not painting all four women as saints. At least a bad egg (Lilian Esoro's character) exists among them.
