2003年春天，在科技部科教國合司（原國科會科教處）的提議下，「展望」系列正式展開，每年分春秋兩季，每季八場，至今連年舉辦主題系列演講，還持續推陳出新。「展望」系列內容涵蓋了物理、化學、生命科學，和尖端工程等前沿科技。命名為「展望」，是希望受邀講座不僅只是介紹特定領域的現況，同時也希望受邀講座能夠以前瞻的眼光，帶領聽眾，了解這個領域因為科學的發展，而在5-10年之後會把人類社會帶到何處。對聽講的來賓而言，能夠知道特定科學領域的尖端發展，也可以讓國人未雨綢繆，預為社會變遷先作準備。
Under the guidance and support of the Department of International Cooperation and Science Education of MOST, we have held a series of popular science lectures, called “Prospects” since the Spring of 2003. The theme “Prospect” means that not only we review the current status of a certain field of science, the speakers also point out the future evolution of the particular field pushed forward with scientific progresses in 5 to 10 years. Every year the series is consisted of two sessions: a Spring session and a Fall session, each containing 8 talks.
