If you’re planning to apply for residency this 2025 year, here’s your January checklist to set yourself up for success:

1️⃣ Reflect on Your Previous Application (if reapplying)
💭 Take an honest look at what went wrong last time. Was it your personal statement, LORs, test scores, or something else? Don’t submit the same application! Make a plan to address gaps and highlight your growth in next years app.

2️⃣ Update Your CV
📋 Make sure your CV is polished and up-to-date. Include all relevant clinical experiences, conferences, leadership roles, research in progress, and volunteer work. This will be crucial to provide to LOR writers!

3️⃣ Draft Your Personal Statement
🖋️ Start brainstorming and outlining your story. What motivates you? Why this specialty? What makes you stand out? Write multiple drafts to refine your message.

4️⃣ Plan Your Away Rotations (if applicable)
🌍 If your specialty values away rotations, research programs and application deadlines now. They can be a great way to showcase your skills and get a feel for a program.

5️⃣ Prepare for ERAS Timeline
📄 Familiarize yourself with the ERAS timeline and requirements. Create a strategy for uploading documents and tracking deadlines.

6️⃣ Network with Mentors and Peers
🤝 Attend specialty interest group meetings, conferences, or virtual meetups. Building connections now can open doors you could never imagine! This could include getting into research projects and even a future interview at a program!

7️⃣ Plan Your Letters of Recommendation
💌 Start reaching out to mentors now! Think about who can best highlight your clinical skills, work ethic, and passion for your specialty. Give them ample time (and context!) to craft a stellar letter. Make sure you get letters in multiple specialities if planning on dual applying!

💡 Pro Tip: Start early and pace yourself. A little preparation now will save you from last-minute stress later. I have worked with dozens of medical students and residents, and those that succeed strategically plan for challenges and

🌟 NEW Article Published: "Understanding the Medical Education Experiences of Low-Income Students Through a Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Lens: An Exploratory Qualitative Study" 📚✨

Highlights:
🔍 Findings: Many low-income medical students face challenges in meeting basic needs like food, housing, mental health, and financial security. These unmet needs impact their ability to thrive and succeed in medical school.

✅ Recommendations: Table 2 outlines actionable steps for medical schools and accrediting bodies to better support low-income and marginalized learners—an area I was especially proud to contribute after my own challenges throughout medical school struggling to meet my basic needs.

👉🏽 Check out the Podcast "Medical School with Dr. Moss" for videos on my journey which helped me create Table 2 in this article!
