The first time I went to watch a football game at a local joint, I was with someone I felt comfortable around—someone I trusted and felt safe with.

As the game was going on, chaos suddenly broke out—people started jumping over tables and running in all directions, like a scene from a movie where everyone was running for their lives. I had never witnessed anything like it before. When I turned to ask him why people were running, he was gone. The seat where he had been sitting was empty. His friend, whom we had come with, was also nowhere to be seen.

A random stranger suddenly shouted, "Madam, toka mbio!" (Madam, run quickly!).

We were on the first floor. As I rushed downstairs to the door, frantically looking for the person I was with, I spotted him on the other side of the road, casually walking home and chatting with other guys. He never even noticed that he had left me behind in the chaos, let alone that it was wrong to do so.

That day, I learned a valuable lesson—not just about my worth to him, but also about preparedness and self-reliance.

In business, just as in life, unexpected situations arise. You may trust certain people to stand by you when challenges occur, but when the storm hits, some will disappear without a second thought. You cannot always rely on others to have your back. You must be prepared to navigate the storm on your own.

I later found out that people were running to avoid getting arrested by the police. To this day, I’ve never understood the logic behind it.

However, one thing was clear—blindly following the crowd without understanding the situation can lead to unnecessary risks. In business, this translates to making strategic decisions rather than following trends just because everyone else is.

Understanding the landscape before taking action is crucial.

Since then, whenever I choose to watch football outside my house, I make sure every detail is carefully planned.

During the 2022 World Cup, I enjoyed watching the matches in public, but I picked my location wisely. I went to Village Market, where I could enjoy the game and get home safely.

This experience taught me three critical business lessons:

1. Be prepared for the unexpected. Crises will happen, and you must know how to handle them independently.

2. Know who you can truly count on. Not everyone who starts the journey with you will stand with you when challenges arise.

3. Make strategic decisions, not emotional ones. Just because everyone is running in one direction doesn’t mean it’s the right move.

Football is more than just a game—it’s a mirror of life and business. Just like in football, in business, you need a strong game plan, resilience, and the right team around you. And above all, you must always be ready to pivot when the unexpected happens.
