DIRECTOR STATEMENT:
Kathaputali means โpuppetโ, in Nepali. Iโve always been passionate about telling organic and authentic Nepali stories. Growing up listening to many terrifying Nepali folklore gave me a strong desire to explore similar subjects, using the power of film. Kathaputali is a product of these influences.
Even today, there still exist many practices and superstitions concerning witchcraft, black magic and shamanic rituals. Kathaputali explores this, as well as themes of corruption and abuse, based on the true stories of past royal families, who exploited innocent young women from surrounding villages.
The hallucinations and nightmarish ordeals, as experienced through the cast, may be interpreted by a viewer in their own personal way. Itโs a slow burn film. A power struggle between father and son. The story of a disturbed family, of confrontation and of empowerment.
