As of this month, EVERY school in Seelterlound (Saterland) in Germany is teaching Seeltersk (Saterland Frisian) to its students, ensuring the last branch of the East Frisian languages is being passed on to the next generation.

2025 is starting well!

Ever heard a Trump impression in Frisian? Well, in the Hûnekop's latest song, 'Bouw Dy Muorre' (build that wall) you will hear just that, and the tongue-in-cheek suggestion to build a wall separating Fryslân from the rest of the Netherlands and to break off the Ofslútdyk (Dutch: Afsluitdijk connecting North-Holland and Fryslân).

As many have been interested, here is a documentary by Omrop Fryslân about the West Frisian dialect of Dutch 'West-Fries.'

This is spoken in a region of North-Holland, called Westfriesland, and while they don't speak Frisian there anymore, the dialect of Dutch has been influenced by Frisian in several ways.

The presenter in the programme speaks Frisian (from Fryslân), while the people being interviewed are speaking West-Frisian Dutch.

This week's video will be on OLD FRISIAN, though as it stands, the video is about half an hour long (!) I therefore wonder if it might be better to split the video into two videos:

A.) Old Frisian: Language History & Evolution (1200-1550)
B.) What did Old Frisian Look Like?

A. Would look at where Old Frisian comes from, where it was spoken and by whom, the type of texts being written in Old Frisian and how it developed throughout the Middle Ages.

B. Would look at the linguistic side of Old Frisian, the sounds of the language, how its grammar and syntax worked, and in-depth differences between its various dialects.

I'm curious to see your thoughts but I think with the option of splitting up the video in two I can cover things in a bit more depth and hopefully not lose as many viewers with such a long video. Of course, if a vast majority votes against then "vox populi."

Thanks!

Hi all! The next video will be premiering live on the channel at 19:15 (Dutch time), 18:15 (UK time), or 13:15 (EDT) 12:15 (CDT), 10:15 (Pacific) for our viewers in the States and Canada. I'll be there to answer any comments in the chat so come and say hi!

In this video I'll be taking a look at the West Frisian variant of the Frisian languages and how a standard variant was slowly (and arguably still is being) developed, and what this means for dialect forms of the language.
