CHANNEL BIRTHDAY (sort of)

Even though I started this account in 2006, I didn't upload a video until 15 years ago. For anyone interested, here's the first video I ever uploaded

SCREEN REAL ESTATE

I added a 4th monitor off to the side, so that I can more easily monitor Reaper while recording covers (my video camera is to the right of the 4th monitor, just out of the picture). Totally overkill, but really, you can never have too many monitors. My GPU has four outputs, so why not seize the day?

PLAYLIST MADNESS

I now have 200 playlists. What a nightmare to try and organize and sort in any sort of meaningful way. I wish there were a better way to cross-reference so that someone could click on a video and immediately know all the playlists it was in because some bass covers are in 4 or 5 playlists.

Anyway!, here is a link to a spreadsheet of the playlists. I think I might take some time and highlight some of the more obscure playlists in some community posts.

And here's a photo of me nearly dying while playing a gig outside in sub-freezing temperatures.

MATT FREEMAN

It's messed up that I have more subs than ‪@MattFreemansBassBunker‬. If you love bass, you should know who Matt is, and if you don't know who he is, go sub to his channel and find out. Every video is a masterclass in melodic punk bass.

Here's a link to my Rancid bass covers (just three)

And here's one of Matt's quicker basslines from Operation Ivy. Quite the workout.

NEW BASS DAY Vol. 96435.2

The cover band has been playing so much, and playing such long shows, that I really wanted a lighter bass to reduce the strain on my shoulder. The neck dive on all my Fender basses gets fatiguing as well.

I was *this close* to ordering a custom Kiesel until they told me the electronics would still be right-handed AKA backwards.

Instead, I went with the Ibanez EGB1005MSL (always a mouthful with those Ibanez names)

This bass is a full 2.2lbs lighter than my black Fender Jazz bass, which has been the main cover band bass for 6 years now. This will be the new main bass, and the black jazz bass will be the backup.

Things I like about the bass:

1. It's light. 7.4lbs
2. stainless steel frets
3. fanned frets
4. locking output jack
5. one of the active EQ knobs functions as a tone knob when in passive mode (even my Dingwall doesn't have that)

Things I don't like:

1. Just like my Dingwall, it seems the nut was cut in some sort of right-handed machine, so the B and E strings are really crammed together, meanwhile, the D and G strings are a mile apart. But I have seen that also on $4000 Music Man basses too. Lefties just get no respect, and that's the way it's always going to be. I will have to carve a nut at some point.

2. The fret markers are really hard to see in low light. The Luminlay side dots don't glow for very long.

Overall, it really is comfortable to play, and I am excited to actually try it out on a gig.

Thought I'd also add a picture of the Ibanez next to my CNZ Audio mini Jazz bass for colour comparison (both seafoam green, though it looks extra blue in these photos)

HIATUS

My queue has almost run out, and I don't know if I'll have time to learn more songs before it does. It's been nearly 5 years of a minimum of one video a day (over 4300 public videos currently), and I am thinking it might be time for a break anyway.

Maybe I'll come back in a month, or a year, or never. Who knows?! Mostly likely I won't entirely quit, but rather upload covers when I have the time. Gigs will slow down in the fall, and then I can maybe focus on the channel again.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who left a kind or encouraging word over the years.

See you at the beach.

Jimi Hendrix closed out Woodstock 55 years ago today (on an overcast Sunday, just like today). No musician or band (not even TMBG) has touched my soul the way Hendrix has. Sometimes, while listening to his music, I have to just shut it off because it's so good that it's overwhelming. He has inspired every guitarist for over half a century.

EDIT: A link to my playlist of Hendrix guitar and bass covers

PEADALBOARD V.7

There was a V6.1 build (see second picture) but I abandoned it for being too cramped.

I think I might actually be done for a while. It's funny that most of my pedalboard is NOT pedals. All of this just for TWO pedals and the freedom of wireless.

With the 6.1 build, I had to remove the IEM transmitter antenna to pack up, which is basically me begging to lose the antenna. Things were also packed so tightly that it was difficult to even see the IEM transmitter to adjust the channel.

This board is only 6 inches longer than the last board, and now I have ample room for everything, including a DI for ampless situations. I was able so space out the pedals so that if the wireless guitar kit fails, I have enough room to quickly unplug it from the tuner and plug in a cable.

The only missing piece is a much smaller aftermarket power supply on order from MyVolts for the Shure PGX4. The one I have currently is on its last legs, and has way too much cable and a giant transformer in the middle that makes cable management underneath the board a hassle.

This is almost like having a rack build. Everything I need is all on this board whether I run an amp or go ampless. I don't like how gigantic the board is, but it still takes up less room than a 6u rack.

PEDALBOARD V.6

The torture never stops.

I had to buy a new IEM unit. At the last gig my Anleon S2 dropped out at least 50 times over 3 sets. It wasn't so bad because the dropouts were less than a second, but having 10 dropouts in a single song gets a little rough.

The Anleon unit served me very well for over a year with so few dropouts until the other night. I am too in love with IEMs to ever go back to floor monitors, if I can help it. IEMs have changed my musical life in a way like nothing else.

So I upgraded from the Anleon S2 (6 channels) to the Sennheiser XS (64 channels) and hopefully will never experience a drop out ever again.

Only trouble is, it's a fair amount bigger than the Anleon unit and I had to arrange things in a way that is less than ideal. I could probably do with a bigger board at this point, as I do not like having everything so cramped.

I'd actually like to pick up that Shure GLXD 16+ so I could have a tuner and wireless unit all-in-one.

Also got rid of the destroyed sticker on the top of my Shure transmitter.

And lastly, I included a picture from a recent gig. Bathed in magenta.
