Built in the heart of the largest private enclosed park in Europe β 704 hectares surrounded by 10.6 km of walls β the ChΓ’teau de Montjeu dates back from the beginning of the 17th century (1606-1622). It was Pierre Jeannin (president of the Parliament of Dijon and adviser to Henri IV) who undertook its construction.
Many people were surprised at the time that βthe Presidentβ chose such a place, completely deserted, to build a castle. He replied: βI will always be far enough from my enemies and my friends will know how to find meβ.
In 1734, Voltaire went to the castle to attend the wedding of the Marshal of Richelieu, and during the 19th century, it became the property of the Talleyrand family through a marriage.
In 1939, an industrialist of wood, Roger Louis DΓ©mon, bought the property and started a great restoration work which will be registered as Historic Monuments after the war.
At the end of the 1980βs, the Franco-British billionaire Sir Jimmy Goldsmith acquired the property. He started a major restoration campaign, including the reconstruction of the gardens and ponds, which had fallen into ruin. The result is quite spectacular.
Please note: the castle of Montjeu is not open to the public.

π° πππππ-ππππππ : When he lived in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Alexandre Dumas enjoyed strolling through a vineyard in Port-Marly (Yvelines). At the height of his fame in 1844, the renowned author purchased this land and decided to build not one, but two chateaus on it. He entrusted this ambitious project to architect Hippolyte Durand.
The main chateau, intended as a residence, was designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, while the smaller chateau, named ChΓ’teau d'If and used as Dumas's study, showcased Neo-Gothic architecture (with the titles of the author's works inscribed on its walls).
Both buildings were inaugurated in the summer of 1847 with a lavish housewarming party attended by over 600 guests.
However, just a year later, Dumas, financially devastated by the bankruptcy of his theater, was forced to sell the property!
Subsequently neglected, the Monte-Cristo Chateau nearly faced demolition in the 1960s due to the interest of a real estate group that wanted to replace it with new development.
Its preservation is credited to historian Alain Decaux, who founded the Society of Friends of Alexandre Dumas to protect the chateau.
Finally, in 1970, three municipalities (Port-Marly, Marly-le-Roi, and Le Pecq) jointly purchased the estate and decided to renovate it with the support of patrons, notably King Hassan II of Morocco.
Today, the Monte-Cristo Chateau serves as a museum dedicated to the memory of Alexandre Dumas.
