The vanity and desires attached to a BMW X6 or a Cayenne Coupe are different because their pricing makes them aspirational. However, things are not so cut and dry with the Tata Curvv and Citroën Basalt, which entered the market last year with all guns blazing. These coupe SUVs were meant to be a stylish alternative to the upright SUVs that the majority of buyers prefer. The promise was the sleek looks of a sedan/coupe paired with a fair amount of SUV practicality—but in the mass market.
We expected some disruption, especially from Tata Motors (courtesy of its fanbase), but sales numbers tell a different story. The coupe SUV segment has never been particularly popular overseas, nor has it gained much traction in India.
For reference, despite being available in both ICE and electric forms, the Tata Curvv managed to sell only around 3,000 units last month—a significant drop from nearly 5,000 in December 2024. Meanwhile, the Basalt, despite being such a well-rounded product, could only clock double-digit figures. Mahindra’s BE.6 also boasts a coupe-style design, but it has several other advantages that contributed to its strong reception.
In the end, a brand’s reputation can make or break a product. However, the reverse is also true when a product is exceptionally strong—like the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster, which created the subcompact and compact SUV segments, respectively. The Curvv and Basalt, on the other hand, are not ground-up products but enhancements of existing models. So, they were never truly groundbreaking, and buyers have treated them as such. Though, kudos to Tata and Citroen for trying to infuse some freshness in the market.
This is why the Indian car market is so brutal. Following the herd after someone else has already cracked the formula is easy—just look at the flood of raised hatchbacks and compact SUVs. I believe these two cars were trying to solve a problem that didn’t really exist.

Went on an epic road trip to Winter Spiti in the Jimny and Thar Roxx 4X4. Jimny with AT tyres feels easy to drive in snow if you’re an experienced driver while the Thar Roxx with Crossdrive AT tyres feels comparatively difficult to manage because of heavy weight and an intrusive ABS system. Nonetheless, both cars sailed easily over the snow-laden roads without any fuss. Which one would you choose for these conditions?

I have seen quite a few iterations of the @mercedesbenz G-Class in India. Recently drove the G 400d, but my first ever tryst was with the G 500 4x4² as a college kid. The usher was kind enough to open the gate for me and my bud to check it out from inside.

Met this daddy (or shall | call it Adam) to all the Maruti Suzuki cars sold in India on the Children's Day (how apt). The SS80 you see here wasn't manufactured completely in India but was a CKD (the way a Mercedes-Benz is manufactured here
It was Mr Harpal Singh's prized possession that he didn't part with until his demise. He was egged by well-wishers to upgrade to the Zen but he didn't. And this car was religiously wiped clean everyday out of sheer love. I was born only by the time this car had almost reached the end of its life cycle (by modern-day Delhi standards). So thank you @maruti_corp for procuring this piece of history for us. It's on showcase at the MSIL corporate office if you want a dekko.
