Strong to the core!
Core strength, it’s all the fashion now and most of us know it’s not all about crunches and six packs.

Pilates instructors will tell you they have all the answers, powerlifters might tell you its not necessary…

So what is your core and why do we need a strong one?

Well put as simply as a Saturday, our core muscles make up our middle. They squeeze and engage to create a stable platform in which our other muscles can work against to create force. You can try it yourself.
Pick up a bottle of water and hold it out to the side. You ‘should’ feel your stomach engage (go tight) in order for your deltoids (shoulder muscles) to hold the bottle in place.
Not feeling it yet?

Try that same action with a few bottles in your hand and you’ll begin to feel the difference.

So thats a very basic example of our core in action.

But why do I need a strong core you ask? Its not as if you plan to be holding bottled water out from the body very often.

Well lets look at how muscles work. When a muscle engages, whether thats the legs, arms or core, the fibres within the muscles are recruited to fire up and perform the action.
When they fire up too often they can get tired, they can get tight and this will limit their function.
If the prime mover (the best muscle for the job in any given exercise) gets tired or is too tight, it put greater strain on the antagonist muscle pairing (the opposite muscle from the one that is working) and also the synergistic muscles (the neighbouring muscles that lend a small hand to help the activity)

As you can imagine, the synergist muscle is not at the best angle to take the full load and the antagonist muscle is supposed to be lengthening in the movement.

To cut a long anatomical story short… something is gotta give. And this is where injuries occur.

Your core muscles are literally at the core of your body, so if these muscles are weak they compromise EVERY other muscle in your system. So when you go to perform something simple like “lets lift this very light box from this surface to that surface”
“OUCH!”
Back goes out… or spasms… or at the very least a sharp pain the reminds you of your mortality.
