During his time, River Phoenix was considered by many critics as the best actor of his generation. More than an actor, I consider River among the pioneers of celebrity activism. Even before his celebrity, River grew up as a vegetarian. He was a compassionate soul who stood up for animal rights and protection of the environment during a time when it wasn't "cool" to do so. The most interesting tidbit I learned this year (2009) in rediscovering River is that his family was living off of solar power back in his time when it was definitely almost unknown to do so. We will miss you eternally, Riv.
